Jon Favreau Set To Return As Showrunner For ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2 (EXCLUSIVE)

Previously it was reported by HN Entertainment that the first live-action Star Wars TV series ‘The Mandalorian’ was expected to be renewed for a second season. For our audiences who are unaware, ‘The Mandalorian’ is a series for the upcoming Disney+ series that is helmed by Jon Favreau and will star Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers, Werner Herzog and Gina Carano, it will focus on a lone gunslinger travelling around the galaxy and if you want more details regarding the series, we recommend you go and rewatch the livestream of the Star Wars Celebration Panel for ‘The Mandalorian’ where more details are providing regarding the characters and story of the series.

To advance onwards into Season 2, we have now heard that HN Entertainment’s reporting is correct and ‘The Mandalorian’ has already been renewed for a second season. With that, according to our sources, we can confirm that Jon Favreau will return as Showrunner for the series, we hear that both Disney and Lucasfilm have been very pleased with his efforts on ‘The Mandalorian’, Disney specifically are very impressed with all of the work Jon Favreau has done for them recently, including ‘The Lion King’ film which is eyeing to be a giant slam dunk for Disney’s box office numbers in July. This could actually lead to Jon Favreau signing a overall first look deal with Disney but that is just speculation as of now.

As for his other crew, Dave Filoni, Rick Famiuywa, Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow and Taika Waititi served as directors on the first season of the series. While we are currently unsure whether most of them will return to direct episodes, we can confirm that Dave Filoni will return in some capacity also in the second season whether that is as a director or in a potential co-showrunner role.

Production for ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2 is eyeing to begin in Summer 2020 which would likely lead to a 2021 release date for the second season. The second season will also return to Los Angeles as its filming location.

As for the future for Star Wars for the smaller screen, Diego Luna and Stephen Schiff are teaming up for the ‘Cassian Andor’ spinoff series that will begin filming in late October for a 2020 release date. As for other shows, Lucasfilm is considering multiple different Disney+ shows to put in development, one that is potentially in the early cooking stages at Lucasfilm HQ is a Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

As Kathleen Kennedy said during the D23 investor day, similar to Marvel, they plan to bring multiple shows to the Disney+ service, these shows will most likely focus on smaller stories in the universe, that was the original plan with the anthology films but it seems they have been moved into limited series’ for the Disney+ service with large galactic scale conflicts being saved for the films. One example of this is ‘Knights of the Old Republic’ which is a property Lucasfilm have been considering development on for a while but seems to be finally be kicked into motion. Although it is not confirmed, it will likely be the focus one of the two announced film trilogies, either from Rian Johnson or ‘Game of Thrones’ creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss rather than a Disney+ series.

Happy May the 4th!
