Following the Disney/Fox acquisition, Disney gained the rights for ‘Diary of A Wimpy Kid’ following Fox 2000 gaining the rights back in 2008 and subsequently making 4 feature films based on the iconic novels. However, following the box office falling flat with the third entry ‘The Long Haul’ only making a mere $40M worldwide on a $22M production budget, it seems that the ‘Diary of A Wimpy Kid’ cinematic franchise was put on hold. This fate for the franchise was solidified following Disney deciding to close down Fox 2000, the production company that created the 4 previous ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ films however it seems that there may still be some life left in Greg’s diary.
We have heard that Disney are in the early stages of development on a ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ project at Disney+ which would be produced by 20th Century Fox Television who are also working on the ‘Love, Simon’ series for Disney+ (which we first exclusively reported). If the decision is made to go further ahead with the ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ project then production will begin in 2020 for release on the Disney+ streaming service which already is set to boast an impressive catalogue of content such as ‘The Mandalorian’, ‘Lady and the Tramp’ and ‘High School Musical: The Musical’, all of which will be available on the first day of the streaming service’s launch on November 12th.
Disney is yet to respond for comment regarding this story.
