We have learned that a sequel to Tall Girl is in the works at Netflix.
Sam Wolfson will return to write the screenplay for the film. The original Tall Girl was his screenwriting debut. It is expected that Ava Michelle will return to star in the film as the titular ‘Tall Girl’, as well as a majority of the supporting cast.
However, Nzingha Stewart is not signed on to return to direct as of now.
Wonderland Sound and Vision will return as the production company behind this sequel, the company’s executives McG, Mary Viola, and Corey L Marsh will produce the film.
As for the plot of this sequel, it is expected to follow Jodi as the popular girl after her rise to power in the first film. However, she begins to feel the pressure of popularity which causes problems with her relationship with Dunkleman.
There is no filming date planned just yet, and I can’t imagine this project begins production anytime soon. The COVID-19 pandemic makes it very difficult for young extras to be found at the moment and schools will not be willing to be used as filming locations until Spring at the earliest. This is especially important with the exponential rise in cases happening in the United States as of now.
Tall Girl 2 follows Netflix’s current trend of building sequels and mini franchises from their small-budget YA successes. These include other series such as The Kissing Booth and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, which both have third installments releasing in 2021.
Although Netflix has never released accurate statistics for the success of these YA rom-coms, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos stated that The Kissing Booth, at the time of its release, was one of the most popular films in the United States. In addition, The Kissing Booth 2 is said to be one of Netflix’s most watched films in 2020.
There is currently no release date set for Tall Girl 2, or what I hope they call Taller Girl.
