We have learned that Academy-Award nominated director Lee Isaac Chung has been hired to direct at least the pilot episode of Beef, the 10-episode dramedy series from Netflix & A24, Chung will also executive produce the series.

Lee Isaac Chung is mainly known for his critically acclaimed film Minari, which released in theaters & VOD during the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, and managed to get nominated for 6 Oscars, the film even won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, Youn Yuh-jung’s first Oscar nomination and win. Lee Isaac Chung received 2 Oscar nominations for Minari, one for Best Director and one for Best Original Screenplay.

Minari, produced & released by A24, stars Steven Yeun, Yeri Han, Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho, Scott Haze, Yuh-Jung Youn and Will Patton and follows a Korean-American family that moves to an Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. The family home changes completely with the arrival of their sly, foul-mouthed, but incredibly loving grandmother. Amidst the instability and challenges of this new life in the rugged Ozarks, Minari shows the undeniable resilience of family and what really makes a home.

This series will reunite Lee Isaac Chung with Steven Yeun, who led the cast of Minari, Yeun’s performance in Minari led to him receiving his first Oscar nomination earlier this year, meaning the reunion between this star and director will be highly anticipated. Steven Yeun will also produce the series through his production company, Universal Remote alongside the second lead actor, Ali Wong, who is also producing.

Beef is one of Netflix & A24’s most anticipated television ventures, with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong set to lead the cast of what is described as a series that follows two people who let a road rage incident burrow into their minds and slowly consume their every thought and action.

Lee Sung Jin is writing and executive producing Beef for Netflix and A24, Lee’s previous credits include writing & producing work on Dave, Tuca & Bertie, Silicon Valley.

“Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, A24 and Netflix. It’s a dream team, and I’m honored to be collaborating with them. I’m also grateful to the guy who yelled at me in traffic three years ago. I did not let it go, and now we have a show,” says Lee Sung Jin about the forthcoming Beef series when it was announced.

“We are incredibly excited to collaborate with Lee Sung Jin and help bring this rich series to life along with the inimitable Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. Sung Jin has created a bold and at times outrageous world. It is an honest and powerful character study of two people who go about searching for connection in the unlikeliest of ways,” says Jinny Howe, VP, Drama Development, Original Series at Netflix about the forthcoming Beef series when it was announced.

Filming is planned to begin at the end of January in Los Angeles and is scheduled to be completed in early Summer of 2022.
