The Russo Brothers are currently in pre-production for their next film ‘Cherry’ that is planned to begin filming on October 7th in Cleveland with Tom Holland in the titular lead role of Cherry. The film will follow the story of Nico Walker’s novel which follows a former Army medic who returned from Iraq with extreme un-diagnosed PTSD and fell into opioid addiction and began robbing banks.
Joe Russo explained at this years’ San Diego Comic Con that ‘Cherry’ is “a story about drug addiction and the opioid crisis. It’s touched us both, it’s a deeply personal movie for us. The gent who wrote the book went through the same growth arc in the same part of the city we grew up in — but different experiences.
Anthony Russo also explained that ‘Cherry’ is “a complicated and mature movie. It doesn’t have the surface-level entertainment of Marvel films, but these are stories that need to be told, and Joe and I are in that position to get these stories made.”
Jessica Goldberg has written the current draft of the screenplay and we have learned that The Russo Brothers’ sister, Angela Russo-Otstot is been hired for the film and will now help to co-write the screenplay with Goldberg. Angela Russo-Otstot is known for writing episodes of ‘The Shield’, ‘Trust Me’ and ‘V’.
