We have learned that Byron Howard and Jared Bush are set to direct Walt Disney Animation’s next film.

Sources say that the film will center on a Latinx family, which is a huge step for Walt Disney Animation Studios. The studio has recently wrapped and released ‘Frozen 2’, which (excluding ‘The Lion King’) has become the highest grossing animated film of all time.

Walt Disney Animation Studios are currently developing ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’, a film that will be set in a realm known as Lumandra, a re-imagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilization, where a warrior named Raya is determined to find the last dragon. Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins will direct and Adele Lim will write the screenplay. That film will release later this year meaning this untitled film from Howard and Bush will likely release in 2021.

Clark Spencer (‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’) and Yvett Merino Flores (‘Moana’) will produce the film. As well as directing the film alongside Byron Howard, Jared Bush will co-write the screenplay with Charise Castro Smith. Smith has previously written and produced episodes of ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, ‘Sweetbitter’ and ‘The Excorist’.

Byron Howard is known for his work directing ‘Tangled’, ‘Tangled Ever After’ and ‘Zootopia’, he also executive produced ‘Frozen 2’. Jared Bush is known for his work writing & co-directing ‘Zootopia’ and writing the screenplay for ‘Moana’.
