We have learned that Gal Gadot is in talks to star as the lead female action hero in an upcoming untitled spy thriller from Skydance. Sources say that the film will be similar to action franchises such as James Bond and Mission: Impossible.
Iconic comic book writer Greg Rucka is set to pen the screenplay for the film. Rucka is known for his work on Action Comics, Stumptown, Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Detective Comics, Lazarus, Whiteout, and Black Magick. He has also written various graphic novels of The Old Guard as well as the screenplay for the recent film.
The Old Guard just released on Netflix this past weekend and has already made it to the top of the streaming platform’s most-watched list. The film was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and stars Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, Marwan Kenzari and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The plot follows a covert team of immortal mercenaries who are suddenly exposed and must now fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered. This script under Netflix was Greg Rucka’s first-ever screenplay.
Plot details are mostly unknown, one source told us that it might be a “Spy v Spy” movie but that is unconfirmed. If talks succeed and Gal Gadot signs on, she will also produce the project for Skydance. Gadot has various films in development including Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Death on the Nile, Wonder Woman 1984, and a lead role alongside Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds in Netflix’s big-budget action thriller, Red Notice. She will also star in the titular role of a Hedy Lamarr in a biopic series for Apple TV+
The initial plan was to begin shooting this spy thriller in late the Summer, however, given that Red Notice has not finished production yet due to the ongoing pandemic, it is unlikely that this new project will begin production anytime soon.
Don Granger and Dana Goldberg will be overseeing the film through Skydance. The studio is known for their action films including recent hits from the Mission: Impossible franchise, the Jack Reacher franchise, Terminator: Dark Fate, World War Z, and Gemini Man. Upcoming films from Skydance include Chris McKay’s The Tomorrow War, Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible 7 & 8, Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, and Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins.
Skydance has also put various films in the pipeline for development during lockdown. This includes Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy’s time travel thriller. The film will follow a man who must travel back in time to get help from his 13-year old self. Together, they encounter their late father, who is now the same age as the man. We heard this film is currently expected to begin filming in October, but again, Ryan Reynolds still has to finish filming Red Notice. We doubt this start date will stick. Another film that Skydance has recently put in the pipeline for development is Bermuda Triangle, a mystery thriller about the infamous sea tale from director Scott Derrickson with Chris Evans in talks to star.
When asked for a comment, Skydance had no comment regarding the story.
