Paramount Pictures Updates from CinemaCon 2023
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Release Date: July 14, 2023
Exclusive Footage Description: CinemaCon attendees were treated to an entire 20 minutes from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. The footage started off with Hayley Atwell’s character getting in trouble with the law in France, and Ethan Hunt coming to take her in for his team’s own unknown reasons. What followed is a very thrilling and absurd car chase wherein Tom Cruise’s Ethan and Hayley Atwell’s character are being viciously chased by a dedicated French assassin played by Pom Klementieff.
Killers of the Flower Moon
Director: Martin Scorsese
Release Date: October 6, 2023
Exclusive Footage Description: Martin Scorsese himself revealed the first teaser for Killers of the Flower Moon exclusively at CinemaCon 2023. The footage fully teases the main conflict between the Osage people and the white settlers in Osage County in 1920s Oklahoma. Leonardo DiCaprio’s character named Ernest Burkhart is very in love with his wife Mollie, played by Lily Gladstone. When more and more white people settle in the town, grisly murders take place and they’re all of the natives. Robert De Niro as William Hale, who’s a sort of mentor to Leo, advises Ernest that they need to make a new for themselves by obtaining the land’s bounties of oil.
When entering this business filled with blood and oil, Ernest bits off more than he can chew. We see a montage of gruesome murders taking place between the white invaders and Osage people, both sides claiming big numbers of bodies back and forth. Corpses are being buried in oil pits and people are being assassinated in broad daylight. The bond between Ernest and Mollie is then tested, as the loving couple questions their loyalty to their opposing people… and who they really trust in this oil war Ernest is then surprised by the arrival of a city detective, played by Jesse Plemons, who comes knocking on his door for answers. He’s here to solve who’s behind this series of murders. Brendan Fraser’s character briefly makes an appearance in the footage.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Director: Jeff Rowe, Kyler Spears
Release Date: August 4, 2023
Exclusive Footage Description: CinemaCon 2023 was treated to a brand new look at Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. The footage was extended from the already-released teaser. Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, and Leonardo all want to be accepted by society instead of being labeled as freaks, so they chose to take on a life of crime fighting. The main villain of the film is Superfly (voiced by Ice-T), with Bebop and Rocksteady being his two biggest bodyguards. When they try to take on Superfly and his crew, they actually end up making friendly introductions since they’re all mutants. They didn’t know other mutants existed so they chum it up in a hilarious meeting scene. Superfly’s team is made up of colorful mutants that are all kinds of animals. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem looks unlike any other upcoming animated feature.
A Quiet Place: Day One
Director: Michael Sarnoski
Release Date: March 8, 2024
Exclusive Footage Description: Although the film wrapped only a few weeks ago, a very brief teaser of A Quiet Place: Day One was shown at CinemaCon 2023. We follow Lupita Nyong’o’s everyday citizen-type character as she’s riding the bus in New York City. Suddenly all traffic stops and people are seen walking out of their cars and staring at the sky. A meteor took out half the bus Lupita’s in, and she slowly walks towards the torn half of the bus (mirroring that image in A Quiet Place Part II where Millicent Simmonds’s Regan stands in the middle of a blasted hole on the side of a train car).
More people surround the scene and stand in the middle of the street as they all look up to the sky and witness a meteor shower, which is of course all the aliens arriving on Earth for the first time. What follows next is a quick montage of more of the film’s action, revealing Djimon Hounsou’s returning character from A Quiet Place Part II, a shot of Alex Wolff’s character running in fear, and a brief moment of Joseph Quinn’s character screeching in pain. The brief footage highlights how humans still don’t know about the aliens’ attraction to sound, so naturally, crowds of people are heard and seen getting taken out in great numbers.
IF
Director: John Krasinski
Release Date: May 24, 2024
Exclusive Footage Description: Since the film is still in the midst of shooting, director John Krasinski was only able to show an early sizzle reel which gave CinemaCon attendees a taste of what kind of family films he’s been developing. IF follows the unlikely pairing of a young girl (Cailey Fleming) and her overbearing adult neighbor (Ryan Reynolds) as they are mysteriously gifted the ability to see people’s old imaginary friends walk about society. The film is a mix of live-action and CGI, with all the imaginary friends being various larger-than-life bizarre creatures. The main character’s imaginary friend is a large purple and fuzzy beast voiced by Steve Carell.
The plot of IF is all about finding new homes for these imaginary friends. In this world, once people forget or move on from their imaginary friends, they’re left in a state of limbo. There’s a whole ensemble of CGI imaginary friends who the main human characters must help, and they’re incredibly different from one another coming in all different shapes and sizes. IF features a very impressive voice cast for these friends, including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Maya Rudolph, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Vince Vaughn, Sam Rockwell, Richard Jenkins, Jon Stewart, Sebastian Maniscalco, Christopher Meloni, and Awkwafina.
