The nominations for the 81st annual Golden Globes are here to signal a new era for the esteemed awards ceremony. With the controversial Hollywood Foreign Press Association now disbanded and certain problematic members expelled, the Globes are embracing change this awards season. For starters, the telecast will now air live on CBS while also being available to stream on Paramount+ as part of a new deal. Since the HFPA is no more, the Globes are now under the ownership of Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge. The Globes organization has continued its efforts to regain the trust of the Hollywood community and entertainment industry at large. To show that diversity and inclusion are still a top priority, the voting pool for the 2024 Golden Globes has been significantly revamped.
The 2024 Golden Globes have expanded the number of nominees in all 27 categories from five to six – allowing more room for deserving talent in film and television to get the spotlight they deserve. Additionally, two completely new categories have been introduced: best stand-up comedian on television and cinematic and box office achievement. The latter category can be seen as the “best blockbuster” award and has already drawn different reactions, with some comparing it to the “Cheer Moment” and “Fan Favorite” awards from the 2022 Oscars. Could these two new categories actually make a positive difference or impact this awards season? It all depends on the nominations, of course.
Films expected to have a huge presence in the nominations for the 2024 Golden Globes include Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. On the side of television, Apple TV’s Ted Lasso, Netflix’s Beef, HBO’s Succession, FX’s The Bear, and ABC’s Abbott Elementary all seem like safe bets to rank high in nominations.
