March 1 will be an unfortunate day for Spider-Man fans… who also happen to be Netflix subscribers. The Netflix streaming service is losing Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) on Sunday, March 1, 2026. This will leave Marvel fans needing more streaming subscriptions to access every Spider-Man film. Tom Holland‘s trilogy — consisting of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) — is currently available on Disney+ alongside the critically acclaimed animated hits Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Across the Spider-Verse (2023).
Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man trilogy is on the move as well. In fact, all three are getting added to HBO Max on March 1, along with the two Amazing Spider-Man movies. The fanbase for both films in The Amazing Spider-Man series has grown exponentially over the past few years, as admiration for Andrew Garfield has slowly grown from his recent leading roles in Tick, Tick… Boom! (2021) and We Live in Time (2024).
While that movie did not make the awards run, the same cannot be said for Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone, who won her second Oscar in 2023 for Poor Things and became the youngest woman in history to have 7 Oscar nominations after gaining another Best Actress nomination for her role in Bugonia (2025).
Why The Amazing Spider-Man 3 Never Happened

When the decision was made by Sony Pictures to once again reboot the Spider-Man franchise — this time set in the highly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe — most fans were excited by the news and especially by the casting of rising star Tom Holland, who immediately sold audiences on his portrayal of the web-slinger in his MCU debut, Captain America: Civil War (2016). However, as time passed, more people grew dissatisfied with the number of open-ended questions left over from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with no opportunity in sight for a third film to answer them.
It was, in fact, those questions that led to the demise of The Amazing Spider-Man universe. Rather than letting the franchise grow naturally over the years, as Marvel Studios did with the successful MCU, Sony decided to overstuff The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with dangling plot threads intended as bait for sequels and spin-offs. This included a late scene in which a mysterious man in a trench coat walked through an Oscorp facility, revealing easter eggs for two iconic Spider-Man villains: Doctor Octopus and The Vulture. This was intended to set up a potential Sinister Six spin-off movie, based on the villainous team from the comics that often consisted of Spider-Man’s greatest foes.
At one point, Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, The Martian) was attached to develop The Sinister Six. That spin-off suffered the same fate as the rest of the universe Sony attempted to create, though. When The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released in theaters back in 2014, the sequel was dismissed as a mess by fans and critics alike, resulting in the worst Rotten Tomatoes score ever for a main Spider-Man movie at 51%. This negative reception also resulted in it grossing $709 million worldwide. A commendable effort for many blockbusters, but TASM 2 boasted a $250M-$300M production budget and was equally the lowest-grossing live-action Spider-Man film ever, making the chances of theatrical profitability close to zero.

The Status of Sony’s Next Spider-Man Movie
Sony currently has two upcoming Spider-Man films: one live-action and one in animation. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the fourth installment in the Tom Holland-led franchise, releasing on July 31, 2026. The story will pick up years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker is known by no one — including his friends Ned Leeds and MJ, played by Jacob Batalon and Zendaya.
While both Batalon and Zendaya are expected to reprise their roles, it will be in a smaller capacity in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. A new supporting cast has been filled, featuring Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear), Marvin Jones III (Black Lightning), Tramell Tillman (Severance), as well as MCU returnees Mark Ruffalo (Crime 101) as The Hulk, Jon Bernthal (Daredevil: Born Again) as The Punisher, and Michael Mando (Better Call Saul) as The Scorpion.
The second Spidey flick slated for release is Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, set to open in theaters on June 18, 2027. The conclusion of the Spider-Verse franchise was originally scheduled to release 3 years ago, on March 29, 2024, but producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Project Hail Mary) decided to delay the film to allow more time for animation and post-production. Beyond the Spider-Verse is expected to pick up immediately after the events of Across the Spider-Verse, which was one of the most critically acclaimed comic book movies ever, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature and a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
