The issue of technology infiltrating every part of our daily social life has been an ongoing debate within culture for the past several years – and was certainly spiked by the onset of COVID-19 in 2020 which led to a very isolated virtual society. This sort of environment spawned many of the issues we see today sprawled across social media – and one of the earliest tipping points was the use of social media before and during the far-right riot on the Capitol on January 6th, 2021.
Facebook has later been found to be culpable in allowing these far-right groups and ideologies to fester within the social media platform – arguably leading to the January 6th riot. Aaron Sorkin aims to analyze the truth & impact of Facebook’s culpability in his latest film The Social Reckoning – a spiritual sequel to his critically acclaimed The Social Network which he wrote for David Fincher.
The Social Reckoning follows a young Facebook engineer Frances Haugen – played by Mikey Madison (‘Anora’) – who enlisted the help of a Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz – played by Jeremy Allen White (‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’) – to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets. Rounding out the cast includes Bill Burr (‘The Mandalorian’), Wunmi Mosaku (‘Sinners’) and Jeremy Strong (‘The Apprentice’) who takes over the role of Mark Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg (‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’).
