Video game movies are easily in the best position they have been. Studios are seeing financial successes for video game movies with The Super Mario Bros and Sonic franchises both now being $1 billion franchises with further sequels for both properties planned – Sonic 4 slated to release in March 2027 whilst Mario 3 still remains heavily rumored to be greenlit alongside a potential Donkey Kong movie. Video game movies have seen some of the biggest critical successes this year in the form of Resident Evil and Exit 8 – both holding over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, a feat that video game movies have never been able to accomplish until 2026. This critical success is paying off financially especially for Resident Evil currently as the film passes $200M worldwide today and is expected to become the biggest movie of the franchise worldwide – after already earning that title domestically in just 4 days.
The video game movie genre has recently allowed for audiences of all demographics to experience these iconic worlds in new mediums that actually work and resonate. Gone are the years of video game movies straying too far from their source material that they hold no recognition to the video game counterpart beyond the name and logo tacked on. Instead, precise accuracy is exactly what video game movies are aiming to achieve now and that can be best summed up with the upcoming Street Fighter movie – with character designs and fighting moves ripped straight out of the games.
Through what fans have seen throughout the promotional materials so far, it is of no doubt that Director Kitao Sakurai is a true Street Fighter fan, bringing in deep cut fight moves from all across the franchise as well as accurately bringing to life every single major Street Fighter character – both visually and narratively. Street Fighter has a truly stacked cast led by Noah Centineo as Ken and Andrew Koji as Ryu joined by Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Roman Reigns as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M.
