New Arrivals for Netflix September 2020

by Aaron Escobar

Netflix has a ton of originals coming in September. The most hotly anticipated The Devil All The Time, a new psychological thriller from director Antonio Campos, will be streaming. Tom Holland plays Arvin Russell, a young man devoted to protecting his loved ones in a town full of corruption and sinister characters. The film stars an ensemble cast with the likes of Robert Pattinson, Riley Keough, Mia Wasikowska and Eliza Scanlen. Enola Holmes, starring Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock’s younger sister, puts the young Holmes at the forefront solving a mystery of her own. Henry Cavill plays older brother and famed detective Sherlock.

Julie finds her passion for music again after starting a band with her trio of ghost friends in Julie and the Phantoms, a new musical series from Kenny Ortega. Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is a new animated series set during the events of 2015’s Jurassic World. It follows a group of six teenagers attending an adventure camp on the opposite side of Isla Nublar who must band together to survive when dinosaurs wreak havoc on the island. And those are just some of the originals. In addition to original documentaries and comedy specials, Netflix is also dropping Coneheads, Real Steel, Zathura and the entire Back to the Future trilogy into its catalog.

Our Recs:

Enola Holmes

When Enola Holmes (Sherlock’s teen sister) discovers her mother missing, she sets off to find her, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord. Based on the beloved book series by Nancy Springer, Millie Bobby Brown takes on the role of Enola with Henry Cavill as Sherlock. Sam Claflin and Helena Bonham Carter round out the rest of the Holmes family as Mycroft and Eudoria. The game is afoot!

The Chef Show (Season 2)

Roy Choi and Jon Favreau in ‘The Chef Show’ courtesy of Netflix

The Chef Show reunites Jon Favreau and Chef Roy Choi after their critically-acclaimed 2014 film Chef. Choi and Favreau travel the world as they explore food in and out of the kitchen with accomplished chefs and celebrity friends. While it’s no doubt a cooking show, it’s almost more than that. It’s more about friendship, history and bringing people together through food in addition to cooking recipes.

Puss in Boots

Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek), Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) in ‘Puss in Boots’ courtesy of DreamWorks

Released in 2011, Puss in Boots follows the titular character long before meeting Shrek and the gang. Puss is joined by Humpty Dumpty and a thief named Kitty Softpaws as they set out in search for the eggs of the fabled Golden Goose to clear his name, restore his lost honor and regain the trust of his mother and town. Although it made $555M at the worldwide box office when it was originally released, the film has sadly begun to be forgotten when it comes to the rest of the Shrek canon. If you haven’t seen it before you’re gonna wanna check it out. It’s a funny, action-packed romp that deserves a spot alongside Shrek 1 and 2.
