Noah Baumbach Set To Write & Direct New Film For Netflix (EXCLUSIVE)

by Jacob Fisher

We have learned that Noah Baumbach will be returning to Netflix to write, direct, and produce an untitled feature film. The aim is to begin production on the film in February 2021 with a planned 2022 release on the streaming service. Plot details are currently unknown at this time. After filming this upcoming feature film for Netflix, Noah Baumbach’s next project will be the live-action Barbie film, which he is working on with Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig.

Noah Baumbach and Netflix have developed a strong relationship following the success of Marriage Story, Baumbach’s last film for the company. Starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Laura Dern, the film followed a stage director and his actor wife who struggle through a grueling, coast-to-coast divorce that pushes them to their personal and creative extremes. The film, written & directed by Noah Baumbach, was a major awards contender last year, especially after the film was nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture. Although the film didn’t nab Best Picture, Laura Dern did win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. Marriage Story was also one of the few Netflix films to be added to the Criterion Collection.

This film is seemingly a part of Netflix’s constant push to dominate the film awards season. They have already produced multiple potential awards contenders for this year including Da 5 Bloods, Mank, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Hillbilly Elegy (which releases in November). and The Trial of The Chicago 7. Netflix have also acquired multiple indie titles over the past few weeks, which could be huge awards contenders. This includes Zendaya & John David Washington’s Malcolm & Marie, Halle Berry’s directorial debut Bruised, and Pieces of a Woman, which Vanessa Kirby won the Best Actress Volpi Cup at the Saturday awards ceremony for during this year’s Venice Film Festival.
