Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming service is saying goodbye to many beloved films and shows in December 2023. Therefore, it’s time for Max subscribers to fill up those watch lists! It was originally reported that Max was planning to remove classic Looney Tunes cartoons at the end of December, which led to controversy online since Bugs Bunny and the gang are the most iconic characters in the studio’s history. The streamer previously removed seasons 16-31 of the famous show at the end of last year to fans’ dismay. However, Warner Bros. Discovery quickly corrected themselves and said that putting Looney Tunes on the list of titles leaving Max in December 2023 was an error.
There is one fan-favorite Looney Tunes title that is still leaving Max at the end of the month though. The 2003 live-action/animated comedy Looney Tunes: Back in Action, led by Brendan Fraser, Jenna Elfman, and Steve Martin, is sadly about to expire from the platform. This news comes off as rather disappointing after the unfortunate situation with Coyote vs. Acme, another live-action/animated hybrid comedy starring the Looney Tunes that was recently almost fully canceled by the studio. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav was planning to shelve the completed film to gain a $30 million tax break, similar to what he did with DC’s Batgirl earlier this year, but has since decided to shop the feature to another Hollywood studio.
Directed by Dave Green and written by Samy Burch from a story by Burch, James Gunn (who is also a producer), and Jeremy Slater, Coyote vs. Acme follows the mischievous Wile E. Coyote as he sues the Acme Corporation after years of their products failing him in his pursuit of the Road Runner. Will Forte stars as Wile E. Coyote’s lawyer while John Cena stars as Acme’s lawyer. Lana Condor of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before fame has a main role in the film as well.
Moving on, Guy Ritchie’s 2015 spy action-comedy The Man from U.N.C.L.E., starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, and Elizabeth Debicki, is leaving Max on December 26, 2023. All five movies in the Final Destination franchise are leaving the streaming service at the end of the month too. On that same note of horror, multiple films from the Conjuring Universe are about to expire from Max, including the Annabelle trilogy and The Conjuring 2. Max subscribers who love horror have to additionally say goodbye to the original Scream trilogy, the original Child’s Play, Trick ‘r Treat, You’re Next, and Insidious: Chapter 2 (another James Wan flick which we also ranked as the best film in the Insidious franchise).
In terms of holiday classics, there’s a wide variety to choose from before they all get removed in the new year. This selection includes Christmas comedies like National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, A Very Harold & Kumar 3-D Christmas, Fred Claus, Four Christmases, Jack Frost, and Elf starring Will Ferrell. Make sure not to leave out animated favorites like Arthur Christmas and The Polar Express. Meanwhile, A Christmas Story and 1938’s A Christmas Carol always make for a fantastic watch with the whole family. Speaking of family hits, even though it’s not a holiday movie, Paddington 2 is leaving as well and is perfect for people of all ages.
Those who recently enjoyed director Paul King’s Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet, in theaters must give Paddington 2 a rewatch too. More notable films leaving Max this month include Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, and George Miller’s two Happy Feet movies.
