Zack Snyder’s epic sci-fi saga comes to an end (for now) in Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver, by far the biggest Netflix streaming premiere of April 2024. Sofia Boutella’s Kora and her team of surviving warriors — which includes her fellow farmer Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), the former Imperium general Titus (Djimon Hounsou), the cyborg swordmaster Nemesis (Donna Bae), a nobleman-turned-blacksmith who can bond with animals named Tarak (Staz Nair), the mechanical knight Jimmy (Anthony Hopkins), and rebel solider Millius (E. Duffy) — will make their last stand against the Imperium forces of the Motherworld. They must defend their new homeworld on the moon Veldt from the evil Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his second in command, Admiral Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein), in order to send a message across the galaxy of a growing rebellion.
For those Netflix subscribers who need clarification, Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire was released last December and the second part will begin streaming on April 19. Additionally, the R-rated director’s cuts of both movies are expected to debut sometime in Summer 2024, according to writer-director Zack Snyder himself. Each cut is said to be roughly one hour longer than the PG-13 versions, meaning that Snyder fans will eventually be treated to 6 hours of the complete Rebel Moon story. Netflix is confirmed to be expanding this IP into a cinematic universe with a wide variety of spin-offs already on the way. But could there be a Rebel Moon sequel down the line? While there’s no confirmation on that just yet, it seems likely.
Another Netflix original film premiere to look out for in April 2024 is Scoop. People who have been lately following the various news stories surrounding the British Royal Family will want to stream this dramatic retelling of the behind-the-scenes drama that went into securing the 2019 BBC television interview with Prince Andrew that solidified his downfall. The disastrous interview focused on Prince Andrew’s previous relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and the unforgivable allegations that were brought to light. The Crown director Philip Martin and playwright/screenwriter Peter adapt this biographical drama which is led by Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Rufus Sewell (Old), and Billie Piper (I Hate Suzie).
Moving on to this month’s Netflix original series premieres, Ripley is at the top of the list. The psychological thriller is based on author Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. This seminal piece of fiction has already been adapted to screen numerous times, most famously in the 1999 movie of the same name led by Matt Damon, and has also continued to inspire many new stories — such as Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn. Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers) portrays the titular Tom Ripley this time around. Audiences follow Ripley, a down-on-his-luck grifter, as he’s hired by the wealthy Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) to convince his wayward son to return home from Italy. This is just the beginning of a new life of deception and fraud for Ripley, as he goes on to assume multiple identities in pursuit of his own ulterior motives.
Horror lovers will want to watch Netflix’s Parasyte: The Grey in April 2024. The South Korean horror sci-fi series is directed and co-written by Yeon Sang-ho — best known for the zombie action thrillers Train to Busan and Peninsula — and is based on the manga series Parasyte by Hitoshi Iwaaki. The plot follows a plague of mysterious parasitic creatures from outer space that begin to take control over humans, creating a new faction of life in the process. Season 6 of the popular Netflix original reality competition series The Circle is releasing this month as well. In terms of other shows getting added to Netflix, subscribers can look forward to all original seasons of HBO’s Sex and the City and all seasons of Starz’s historical adventure series Black Sails debuting on the streaming service in April 2024.
Families will want to stream Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp, a new live-action/animated hybrid adventure featuring the titular iconic cartoon. Space Jam: A New Legacy is arriving on the streamer this month as well along with the first two Hotel Transylvania films and The Land Before Time; there’s no better time to gather the kids around for a Netflix family night! For older teens and adults, numerous laugh-out-loud comedies like Happy Gilmore, Knocked Up, Role Models, and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby are coming to the streaming platform, too. Meanwhile, those looking for action and suspense will be able to stream The Matrix trilogy, M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and Glass, Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, and Spike Lee’s Inside Man. George Lucas’ timeless classic American Graffiti is also getting added to Netflix in April 2024 and always makes for a great watch.
The next two Netflix recommendations for April 2024 go to Anyone But You and Strange Way of Life. Anyone But You, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, was a global box office success and is finally making its way onto streaming. Subscribers in the mood for a good old-fashioned rom-com, with some extra hints of early 2000s nostalgia no less, will not be let down by this movie. Strange Way of Life is a romance too, but on the tamer side. Writer-director Pedro Almodóvar’s dramatic short film is a Western that explores the forbidden love between a cowboy (Pedro Pascal) and a sheriff (Ethan Hawke). The two gunslingers reunite after 25 years apart in a story that Almodóvar has described as his answer to Brokeback Mountain.
