After years of development, Amazon’s live-action Fallout series is finally premiering on Prime Video in April 2024. Creators/showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider, Captain Marvel) and Graham Wagner (Portlandia, Silicon Valley) are joined by executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy (both known for creating HBO’s Westworld). Bethesda Game Studios producer Todd Howard, who directed multiple games in the famous role-playing video game franchise the series is based on, joins as an executive producer as well, ensuring that Fallout fans are treated to a worthy TV show adaptation on this streaming platform.
Set in a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland, wherein the United States became a retrofuturistic society that succumbed to a resource war, audiences follow Lucy (Ella Purnell), a young woman who’s only lived in a fallout bunker her whole life. When this “Vault dweller” decides to leave and explore the outside world in hopes of restarting civilization, she comes across The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), a mutated gunslinger and bounty hunter who takes her under his wing in a devastated version of Los Angeles full of savages. Fans of the Fallout video games will have 8 episodes of this Prime Video original series to sink their teeth into, all of which will be released on April 11, 2024.
The next Prime Video original premiere to look out for in April 2024 is the rom-com Música. Internet personality, social media star, musician, and actor Rudy Mancuso makes his directorial debut here. Part coming-of-age story and part romantic comedy, Música is a semi-autobiographical retelling of Mancuso’s own life as an artist with synesthesia — a perceptual phenomenon that causes sensory crossovers, such as tasting colors or feeling sounds. Camila Mendes of Riverdale fame stars alongside Mancuso, making this her second Prime Video exclusive rom-com this year after Upgraded which debuted in February. Rudy Mancuso infuses his Brazilian culture into Música not just by writing the script and directing but by also co-writing the music itself, making this a guaranteed good time for Prime Video subscribers in April 2024.
How To Date Billy Walsh is another new Prime Video original film this month that just so happens to be a rom-com. This one has a more classic story, though. Archie (Sebastian Croft) must hide his feelings for his childhood best friend, Amelia (Charithra Chandran), in order to protect their friendship. But when the new school heartthrob Billy (Tanner Buchanan) enters the picture to potentially steal Amelia away, Archie realizes that it might be time for him to swallow his pride and confess his feelings. The next Prime Video recommendation for April 2024 takes a drastic turn from the previous ones. The horror anthology series THEM, created by Little Marvin and executive produced by Lena Waithe, is returning for its second season on April 25, 2024.
The plot of THEM Season 2, titled THEM: The Scare, takes place in 1991 Los Angeles and follows LAPD Detective Dawn Reeve (Deborah Ayorinde) as she attempts to solve a grisly murder spree during one of the city’s most turbulent times for the Black community. There’s more to this mystery, though, as it’s soon revealed that there’s an ominous and malevolent supernatural force at play. In addition to Deborah Ayorinde returning from season one as the new protagonist, THEM: The Scare features the talents of legendary actress and singer Pam Grier (Jackie Brown). Prime Video subscribers eager for more horror can also stream last year’s Pet Sematary: Bloodlines and The Exorcist: Believer, both of which are getting added to Prime Video in April 2024.
Those still catching up on recent Oscar-winning films will be happy to know that Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers is making its way onto Prime Video on April 29, 2024. Set in the early 1970s, the movie centers on the unlikely relationship between strict history teacher Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti) and student Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa). Hunham is forced to chaperone a small group of students with nowhere to go on Christmas Break. Stuck at their prestigious New England all-boys boarding school, the group learns how to appreciate each other’s company during what is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. The Holdovers received 5 nominations at the 2024 Oscars, with Da’Vine Joy Randolph winning Best Supporting Actress for her heartfelt portrayal of Mary Lamb, the school’s grieving cafeteria manager who learns to bond with the boys of Barton Academy in her own way.
Other must-see films that are new on the Prime Video streaming service this month include Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin, Matt Reeves’ Cloverfield, Guy Ritchie’s Snatch, Tony Scott’s Top Gun, Paul Verhoeven’s Total Recall, James Cameron’s Titanic, and two Martin Scorsese pictures: The Aviator and The Last Temptation of Christ. Just for fun, Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever and Batman & Robin are now available on the streamer as well. Finally, moviegoers excited to see The Fall Guy in theaters this April and in the mood for more Ryan Gosling should know that The Notebook and The Big Short just got added back to Prime Video, too.
