The best way to beat the heat this summer is by staying inside and binging Netflix. In July 2024, Netflix is the streamer to watch, boasting a wide variety of new original films and shows, along with more than a few familiar favorites. As the streaming giant that started it all, Netflix looks to maintain its prestige with no less than two big franchise revivals hitting the platform this month. The first is the long-awaited legacy sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. After decades of being stuck in development hell, the fourth entry in superstar Eddie Murphy’s iconic Beverly Hills Cop franchise will finally see the light of day as a Netflix Original Film when it premieres on July 3, 2024.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F sees Eddie Murphy reprise the role of Axel Foley after 20 years (last seen in 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III). On top of this, it’s been 40 years since Murphy originally introduced the character in the first movie, 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop. This fourth film now follows police lieutenant Axel Foley as he returns to Beverly Hills to protect his criminal defense attorney daughter, Jane Saunders (Taylour Paige), from an insidious conspiracy. Familiar faces like Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot reprise their hilarious supporting roles from the original trilogy. The great Kevin Bacon and Joseph Gordon-Levitt also join them in the cast for this fourth outing. Additionally, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F marks the feature directorial debut of Australian filmmaker Mark Molloy. If it wasn’t already obvious, this is as high profile as it comes for a Netflix movie.

The other big franchise making a comeback on Netflix in July 2024 is that of The Karate Kid. More specifically, in Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 1. The beloved streaming series centering on original Karate Kid villain Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) reopening the titular dojo and healing his rivalry with Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), is set to kick off its sixth and final season on July 18, 2024. That’s right, Cobra Kai Season 6 will be its last and be divided into 3 parts, each consisting of 5 episodes. After Part 1 releases this month, fans can expect Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 2 to hit Netflix on November 24, 2024, and then Part 3 sometime in 2025. The premiere of this Netflix show’s grand finale will surely draw in tons of viewers, with a boost coming from the rising popularity of Cobra Kai co-star/Blue Beetle actor Xolo Maridueña.

It also shouldn’t be ignored that a new Karate Kid movie is confirmed to be hitting theaters in 2025 via Sony Pictures — with both Jackie Chan (who co-led the 2010 reboot) and Ralph Macchio set to star. Though co-creator Jon Hurwitz has teased that Cobra Kai Season 6 will expand the scope of the Miyagiverse, fans will have to wait patiently to see how the new film connects to the Netflix series. Movin onto anime, Netflix subscribers can stream The Imaginary when it debuts on July 5, 2024. Directed by former Studio Ghibli producer/animator Yoshiyuki Momose from a script by colleague Yoshiaki Nishimura, The Imaginary is only the third feature film from Studio Ponoc, coming after 2018’s Modest Heroes and 2017’s Mary and the Witch’s Flower. Founded in 2015, fans will be happy to know that Studio Ponoc has received the support of multiple former Ghibli animators and directors.

Relying on hand-drawn animation, the story of The Imaginary centers on Rudger, a young boy who exists as an “Imaginary,” an invisible creature created by grieving girl Amanda. It’s a fine addition to the stable of Netflix’s international features, and this will only continue as the streamer has struck a deal for the global streaming rights of Studio Ponoc’s future animated projects. Additionally, the film’s rave reviews from its Japan release feel primed to entice those looking for beautiful animation for kids and adults alike. The last major premieres in July 2024 are new seasons of the Netflix reality shows Too Hot to Handle and Love Is Blind: Brazil, as well as the new four-part documentary sports series Simone Biles Rising — which will chronicle the titular athlete’s controversial decision to withdraw from the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, and her current journey toward the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Outside of Netflix Originals, plenty of classic movies and shows are coming to the streaming service in July 2024, too. The Back to the Future and Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogies are primed to push Netflix subscribers’ nostalgia buttons when they arrive at the top of the month. Those looking for their next juicy binge will want to dive into all six seasons of the ground-breaking ABC drama series Lost. Meanwhile, Jigsaw is an excellent way to prepare for the upcoming sequel, Saw XI. Subscribers hungry for more horror can dive into The Conjuring Universe with new arrivals like Annabelle and The Nun. For the family, Paw Patrol: The Movie, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2, and Trolls Band Together are there to bring the laughs.

Moviegoers who just enjoyed seeing Bad Boys For Life in theaters will be able to stream director Michael Bay’s first two Bad Boys movies this month as well. On the note of Will Smith, the 2010 Karate Kid remake, led by his son Jaden Smith, just got added to the streaming platform for those Cobra Kai fans who can’t wait til the middle of the month to get their karate fix. Finally, the psychological horror film American Psycho, starring Christian Bale, rounds out the must-see Netflix additions for July 2024. Discover more on our monthly recs below, then check out the full list of what’s coming to Netflix in July 2024.
