SAG Awards 2024: The Nominations

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) is here to celebrate its 30th Annual edition of the SAG Awards. The SAG Awards are focused only on acting, but because many SAG-AFTRA members form an important part of the Academy, winners here can further solidify the outcome of the Oscars race. The biggest awards of the night go to the main cast in a motion picture and the main ensembles in a comedy and drama series. The SAG Awards carry another unique quality in their two stunt categories dedicated to stunt ensembles in film and television. Following last year’s historic WGA and SAG strikes, the 2024 SAG Awards will surely be one to remember as Hollywood’s actors gather together to celebrate each other’s work.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie came out on top of the 2024 SAG Award nominations for film, each getting recognized with 4 nods. Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction followed right after with 3 nods each. On the side of TV, HBO’s Succession reigned over the competition with 5 nods. Following right behind are HBO’s The Last of Us and FX’s The Bear with 4 nods each.

There were some chaotic surprises in the 2024 SAG Award nominations. First of all, Penélope Cruz finally made it into the Supporting Actress category for her standout role in Michael Mann’s Ferrari. Her odds of an Oscar nomination just got a bit higher. The same goes for Sterling K. Brown and Willem Dafoe in Supporting Actor, as they pushed out Mark Ruffalo and Charles Melton who had been mainstays in the category this awards season until now. Speaking of Melton, May December was shut out completely, with neither Natalie Portman or Julianne Moore getting any recognition. This arguably puts Todd Haynes’ film in more of a wild card position moving forward.

Two other major names that were shut out are Leonardo DiCaprio for Killers of the Flower Moon and Jeremy Strong for the final season of Succession. Zac Efron also didn’t secure a Lead Actor nom for his role in The Iron Claw, basically putting all awards hopes for that film to rest for now. However, this wasn’t the only A24 movie shut out. Past Lives got zero love at the 2024 SAG Awards, which could mean it’s not as a safe bet in the Oscars race for acting as many were thinking. The current Oscar safe bets in the four main acting categories include Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer, Emma Stone for Poor Things, both Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling for Barbie, both Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan for Maestro, and Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers.

Tune in to the 2024 SAG Awards live on Saturday, February 24 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on Netflix. This will be the first time the SAG Awards are streamed live on Netflix following the streamer’s acquisition of the rights to the actor guild’s awards show last year. You can also find the winners for the 2024 Golden Globes and our very own DiscussingFilm Critic Awards right here on the site.
