San Diego Comic-Con 2024 (SDCC) is set to be a big comeback for Marvel Studios. Following a less-than-stellar 2023 with films such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, the success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 helped to keep some semblance of momentum going for the now gargantuan studio. Now, it seems that Kevin Feige and the rest of the team at Marvel Studios are looking to keep the momentum of Deadpool & Wolverine’s financial and critical hype going with announcements at Hall H.

With the studio choosing not to have a presence at SDCC’s coveted Hall H last year, there are expectations for some big announcements regarding the future of Phase 5 and updates to the Multiverse Saga, along with updates on production for Thunderbolts*. Kevin Feige already teased news regarding the Fantastic Four following the Deadpool & Wolverine Celebration of Life Panel on Thursday night, and all that remains to be seen is if there will be any news on the elusive and currently untitled fifth Avengers film. Needless to say, there’s plenty of potential for surprise announcements.

Below are all the updates for the Marvel Studios SDCC panel. In addition to all the major announcements, the DiscussingFilm team is in attendance and can provide exclusive footage descriptions straight from the panel itself.

Every New Marvel Studios Reveal from SDCC 2024

New Phase 5 & Multiverse Saga Updates

The biggest surprise update to the Multiverse Saga was the confimration of the Russo Bros. returning to the MCU, and that Avengers 5 has been given a new title: Avengers: Doomsday. Scheduled for release in May 2026, a newly designed Avengers: Secret Wars logo was also revealed along with a new release date of May 2027. To add to that, it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr. would be playing the role of Victor Von Doom.

The Russo Brothers would then say that they needed “the greatest actor in the world to play that character. We give you the one person who can play Victor Von Doom.” With the simple satement of “new mask, same task” Robert Downey Jr. would express his love of playing “complicated characters.”

Captain America: Brave New World

Kevin Feige started the panel by bringing in the cast of Captain America: Brave New World. Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Giancarlo Esposito, and Tim Blake Nelson took to the stage as Feige describes Brave New World as a grounded return to the style and aestehtics of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. To expound upon that, Anthony Mackie would speak of his supporting cast as “very good intricate characters that help him (Sam) move thorugh the plot and the story. He’s not a muscle bound guy; he’s thoufhtful and cerebreal.”

New Plot Details: It’s revealed that Giancarlo Esposito’s character, which was added during reshoots, is the leader of The Serpent Society, Sidewinder. There was also the reveal that adamantium, the famous metal from Marvel comics, is responsible for things like Wolverine’s claws/skeletons and is considered just as powerful as Vibranium. At the start of Brave New World, countries all over the world are fighting for adamantium resources, but President Ross’s goal is to share the wealth with the world. To do that, he asks Sam Wilson to rebuild the Avengers with him.

Exclusive Footage Description: What followed after this announcment is the same footage that was shown at CinemaCon 2024, along with a scene featuring new President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) directly talking about the celesital that came out of the Earth at the end of The Eternals, and the production adamantium. Sam Wilson is shown with Joaquin, in his Falcon suit as they are flying together. The footage ends with President Ross becoming the Red Hulk at a podium in front of the White House. The Red Hulk’s face looks exactly like Ford, only with yellow eyes and black hair.

Following the Captain America: Brave New World cast appearance, Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier walked on stage along with the cast of the film; Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell, Florence Pugh, Geraldine Viswanathan, Sebastian Stan, and David Harbour in costume and acting in character as The Red Guardian. Florence Pugh would go into detail about the stunts of the film before the footage was shown to fans.

New Plot Details: Feige was sure to point out that the Thunderbolts will not be named after Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford). The cast also described the team as struggling and reluctant to work together as well.

Exclusive Footage Description: The footage begins with Yelena visiting Alexei’s messy and unkept apartment, asking if he is fulfilled. A dramatic version of the Pixies song “Where is My Mind” begins to play as the Thunderbolts are each individually assigned to the same assignment and end up fighting each other. A character named “Bob,” shown in a hospital gown, is introduced before the footage ends.

Fantastic Four

The logo for The Fantastic Four: First Steps logo revealed at SDCC 2024

The cast of the Fantastic Four were introduced in the Hall H panel, along with the new title of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

New Plot Details: Director Matt Shakman stated that he wants the powers of Fantastic Four to feel real, talking to scientists and animal experts. The film will not just be doing a 1960’s setting and aesthetic, but a futuristic version of the time period. Shakman would say that the New York in the film is “what you’ve seen from the 60’s and something more.”

Exclusive Footage Description: The footage, filmed in a 4:3 aspect ratio, looks like it is playing on a retro television. It starts with Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) teaching a classroom, asking if they want to see an explosion. The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) is seen on the retro dating show The Dating Game, but only as a silhouette. The footage ends with the team in astronaut suits, with the last names of the characters on the suits, as they enter a retro-futuristic-looking rocket before the ship takes off, and the aspect ratio of the footage changes. The footage ends with Galactus’ face behind a building; part of his face is seen through the building, and it’s clear he has a comic-accurate look.
