HBO Max will be coming off the heels of its biggest month going into January. December was already huge with multiple titles and the Holiday drop of Wonder Woman 1984. As many know, 2021 is only going to up the ante for Warner Bros. are going to release all of their tent pole titles on HBO Max. This plan isn’t so simple though. For starters, the major films will also be released in theaters (in International markets and wherever they are safely open) on the same day. This is looking very likely in more locations as COVID-19 vaccines begin to reach the public. Secondly, the major films will only be available at no additional charge on HBO Max for only a limited window, such as one month after premiere. Thirdly, with Warner Bros.’ monumental decision causing major backlash across all corners of Hollywood, there’s no telling how this model will turn out.
January sees the debut of The Little Things on HBO Max, a film that falls into this unique category. Lead by Denzel Washington and Rami Malek, this crime thriller is certainly fit for the theatrical experience, and that option will be available wherever possible. Streaming services almost never release detailed metric reports, but it wouldn’t be hard to imagine that WW84 performs well during the Holidays. It should be interesting to see how numbers range across the various big-budget films coming to the streamer. Will something like The Little Things find an audience on HBO Max in January? Washington has proven time and time again of his ability to put people in seats, so perhaps viewers will turn out, even if it is a more adult-oriented genre. January is usually regarded as the slowest month of the year for movies; 2021 doesn’t seem much different but at least Denzel Washington is back.
Check out everything coming to HBO Max along with more of our recs below. See what’s also coming to Netflix and Disney+ in January 2021!
Our Recs:
The Little Things
Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon (Denzel Washington) is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. Instead, he becomes embroiled in the search for a killer who is terrorizing the city. Leading the hunt, L.A. Sheriff Department Sergeant Jim Baxter (Rami Malek), impressed with Deke’s cop instincts, unofficially engages his help. But as they track the killer, Baxter is unaware that the investigation is dredging up echoes of Deke’s past, uncovering disturbing secrets that could threaten more than his case.
The main cast also includes Jared Leto and Natalie Morales. As part of Warner Bros’ 2021 release strategy, The Little Things will simultaneously be released in theaters and on HBO Max on January 29. If you have been craving for a new Denzel performance, your time is here!
Euphoria Part 2: Jules

HBO had already greenlit season 2 of Euphoria, but due to the pandemic, production on the new season is indefinitely delayed. In its place, HBO commissioned two special episodes that bridge the gap between season 1 and 2. Part 2 follows Jules (Hunter Schafer) over Christmas as she reflects on the year.
Schafer co-wrote the special episode with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, and served as co-executive producer. The previous special followed Rue (Zendaya) and her sponsor Ali getting pancakes on Christmas, discussing Rue’s path to sobriety and her relationship with Jules. Both specials were produced under COVID-19 guidelines.
Part 1 is streaming now on HBO Max. Part 2 releases on HBO and HBO Max on January 24!
Batman: The Animated Series / Batman Beyond

An icon of animated super heroics, Batman: The Animated Series won four Emmys and ran for 85 episodes on Fox in the ’90s. The series followed Batman and his sidekick Robin fighting there way through crime in Gotham City. Batman Beyond takes place in 2039 Neo-Gotham and follows Terry McGinnis, a young man who revives the Batman mantle under the guidance of a retired Bruce Wayne. Beyond ran for 52 episodes later in the decade and would go on to also win two Emmys. Both shows are iconic in their own right, and paved the way for new generations in superhero media.
Wonder Woman 1984 releasing on Christmas Day was already a nice gift for DC fans, but it turns out HBO Max still isn’t done for both of these animated gems release on January 1. Now is the time to binge these if you haven’t already!
