Just in time for Summer, Hulu is packing a lot of heat this July. Coming off June, which saw new originals like season 2 of Love, Victor and A24’s False Positive, the streamer isn’t looking to slow down. There’s going to be something for everyone, with the two most anticipated originals being Questlove’s Summer of Soul and Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Stories. The former is possibly on track to be an early awards contender in the documentary field. But that’s not the only music doc premiering this month, subscribers can also look forward to the Paul McCartney piece, McCartney 3,2,1.

On top of this, a slew of recent comedy hits are joining Hulu in July. Fans will be pleased to find Bill & Ted Face the Music and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar easily available to stream, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. See more on our recs below along with all the films and TV shows coming to and leaving Hulu in July. You can also find what’s in store for Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+ on DiscussingFilm.

Our Recs:

Summer of Soul

SUMMER OF SOUL | Official Trailer | In Theaters and on Hulu July 2

Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) premiered this year at Sundance and went on to win both the Grand Jury and Audience awards at the fest. Questlove, in his directorial debut, recounts one of the biggest music festivals that most people have probably never heard of. The 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival took place over the course of 6 weeks (during the same summer of Woodstock no less) and featured big musicians like Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight. Yet, this massive celebration of Black love and artistry has since slipped into the obscure. The film seeks to answer why while giving it due honor.

American Horror Stories

Not to be confused with the upcoming tenth season of AHS, American Horror Stories is Ryan Murphy’s spin-off from the core show. This will be a 16 episode anthology series, diving into standalone Horror myths and legends in each episode. This could end up being the change of pace that the AHS brand certainly needs, and fans will definitely be happy to see returning faces from past seasons getting more time to shine in new roles. One big name, in particular, Sarah Paulson has actually confirmed that she will be directing an episode instead of acting. One can also expect to see stars from Glee, The Prom, and even Riverdale on screen.

American Horror Stories will have its 2 episode premier on July 15

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar

Having taken audiences by surprise in February, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar will finally be available to stream. “A great bit of positive escapism,” there’s way more to this comedy than meets the eye. The film follows two best friends from the Midwest on a Florida vacation. They soon find themselves in the middle of an evil scheme bent on destroying their sunny getaway. Coming from Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, Barb and Star is full of surprises and further proves the duo as superb comedic minds. The film is “definitely worth a try as it may revitalize your comedic tastes.”

Leaving Hulu in July

There is an abundance of titles leaving Hulu in July. One might notice that some of them just arrived at the beginning of the month, but being available for just a short amount of time before going off to somewhere else is just one result of complicated streaming contracts. Another thing to take note, plenty of titles are leaving with most, if not all, of their sequels as well. Examples seen below include the following series: Predator, Robocop, Star Trek, Ong-Bak, and Batman Begins + The Dark Knight. Check out the whole list of everything leaving Hulu in July below.
