New Arrivals for Netflix February 2022

by Joe Aranda
Leatherface stands in the middle of a tall wheat field as seen in the new TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE coming to Netflix in February 2022.

Netflix is finding its footing in 2022 as they are set to release a slew of originals knee-deep in pop culture and more fan-favorites in the month of February. From a 3-part documentary on the rise of Kanye West to an animated series on a modern cult video game classic, Netflix is pulling out all the stops. Although only the first two episodes of Kanye’s documentary will be released in February, you can also look to other thrilling documentaries such as The Tinder Swindler, focusing on a fraudster who used the titular app to con money from women, or season 2 of Catching Killers, where investigators take you behind-the-scenes on the most infamous serial killer cases.

Those seeking a few laughs can find comfort in Steve Carell’s return in season 2 of Space Force, or everyone’s favorite animated hit Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. If scares are what you’re looking for, give Texas Chainsaw Massacre a shot. The 9th entry in the Texas franchise follows recent trends and is a decades-later sequel to the original film directed by Tobe Hooper, where Leatherface steps out of the shadows to wreak havoc and skin old and new faces alike. Moving on, Zack Snyder fans are also in for a treat this month as arguably his best film, Watchmen, and his only animated film to date, Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, will be available to stream.

There’s way more ground to cover, so continue on for our monthly recommendations along with the full list of everything coming to and leaving Netflix in February 2022 below. You can also find what’s about to arrive and depart from Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+ right here on DiscussingFilm.

Netflix is adding a new addition to its anime vault with Child of Kimiari Month. The film follows 12-year-old Kanna a year after losing her mother as she learns that she must now complete a family mission to deliver offerings to the annual gathering of Gods in the sacred land of Izumo. Kanna’s mother was set to complete the mission until her passing. With the hope of reuniting with her long-gone mother in the God’s land, Kanna must now journey across Japan and uncover the mystery surrounding her heritage and how it relates to the afterlife. Those looking to get sentimental this month can look no further.

jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy

jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy | Official Teaser | Netflix

Kanye West ended 2021 at a high point with the release of his newest album, Donda, and a unique benefit concert guest-starring Drake. 2022 looks to be no different with the release of jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy. This intimate docuseries covers over two decades, charting West’s journey from the south side of Chicago to the top of the rap world. Directed by Clarence “Coodie” Simmons and Chike Ozah, this special event will be split into 3 parts. This creative duo behind the scenes is best known for directing A Kid From Coney Island, a feature documentary about the rise, fall, and rebirth of ex-NBA star Stephon Marbury. Now, audiences on Netflix will be able to witness the birth of a musical genius.

jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy kicks off on Netflix on February 16!

The Cuphead Show!

THE CUPHEAD SHOW! | Official Trailer | Netflix

One of the most popular indie games in history is getting its own animated tv series in The Cuphead Show! The series will premiere with a 12-episode season and Netflix has even already been renewed it for two more. The show stars Tru Valentino as the impulsive Cuphead and Frank Todaro as his easily swayed brother Mugman.

Valentino is recognized most as Aaron Thorsen in ABC’s The Rookie and as Adam in the video game Psychonauts 2. Todaro is best known as Leif in the anime Vinland Saga and as Starscream in Netflix’s Transformers: War for Cybertron trilogy. The Cuphead Show! will include special guests such as comedian Wayne Brady and seasoned voice actor Grey Griffin. Seeing the game brought to life with this much care will surely bring joy to fans, and these hilarious misadventures on Netflix will only grow the fandom larger.

The Cuphead Show! debuts on Netflix on February 18!

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE | Official Trailer | Netflix

From the minds of Evil Dead (2013) and Don’t Breathe duo Fede Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is looking to set itself apart from recent horror revamps. After nearly 50 years of hiding since Tobe Hooper’s original tale, Leatherface has returned to terrorize a group of idealistic young friends who accidentally disrupted his carefully shielded world.

If that wasn’t bad enough, influencers have also invaded his remote Texas ghost town looking to breathe some “fresh” life into it. Throw in Sally Hardesty, the lone survivor from the first film, looking to get even with Leatherface and you have a certified legacy sequel. This is only the second directing gig for filmmaker David Blue Garcia, a rising voice in the local indie film scene in Texas, rightfully so.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre slashes its way onto Netflix on February 18

Vikings: Valhalla

Vikings: Valhalla | Official Teaser | Netflix

Vikings ended in 2020 with a majority of its episodes on the History Channel and the last 10 on Prime Video, but Netflix saw its potential and decided to produce a spin-off in Vikings: Valhalla. A hundred years have passed since the original series and a new generation of legendary heroes have risen to forge their own destiny, and make history. Centering on the final years of the Viking age, Valhalla will chronicle the adventures of notable explorer Lief Eriksson, his sister Freydis Eriksdotter, and Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson.

Tensions between Vikings and English royals violently reach a breaking point as an epic journey across oceans and battlefields (albeit bloody) begins. From Kattegat to England and beyond, the fight for survival and glory continues. For those who have never seen Vikings, this spin-off will not heavily rely on references to the original series, but it will try and reel you in for more good old-fashioned Norse mayhem.

Vikings: Valhalla premieres on Netflix on February 25
