HBO Max continues to be a cinema lover’s favorite streaming service as many films that were just playing on the big screen in the last few months will now be streamable in February 2022. If you couldn’t make the theater trip to watch the latest from masterminds Guillermo del Toro and Wes Anderson, Nightmare Alley and The French Dispatch respectively, then now’s the best time to catch up, especially since both films have the potential to bring home Oscar gold. Another 20th Century Studios-related, you’ll also be able to stream 2021’s pop culture event in Free Guy, Ryan Reynolds’ meme of a movie that includes a slew of cameos from famed internet personalities.
A couple of season finales are on the horizon with Peacemaker wrapping up its hilariously outrageous first outing and Euphoria settling in on its zestful, yet traumatic second season. If animation is more up your alley, then strap in for the streaming premiere of Rick and Morty season 5. In terms of older classics, there will be a double feature on the streaming service just waiting to happen as The Butterfly Effect (Director’s Cut) and Donnie Darko will be available to give you a mind melt like no other. Finally, we can’t leave out hotly anticipated HBO Max originals like season 2 of Raised by Wolves and Steven Soderbergh’s KIMI, lead by none other than Zoë Kravitz.
Read more on our monthly recs along with the full list of everything coming to and leaving HBO Max in February 2022 below. You can also find what’s new and about to expire from Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu right here on DiscussingFilm.
Our Recs:
Raised By Wolves: Season 2
HBO Max’s most proficient sci-fi drama is back. Raised by Wolves centers on two androids, Father and Mother, who are tasked with raising human children on another planet after Earth was destroyed by a great holy war. The first season saw the same religious conflict that killed civilization follow the new colony to their virgin planet, and the androids learning that there may be way more to their programming than they know.
Season 2 looks to further explore its themes of science vs. religion, and more deeply, logic and reason vs. faith and belief. Things are bound to get weirder, with killer space snakes already on the table as more of this new host planet is explored. If Apple TV+’s See and HBO’s Westworld is up your alley, Raised by Wolves should be the perfect watch.
Season 2 of Raised By Wolves kicks off on HBO Max on February 3!
KIMI
Steven Soderbergh’s latest HBO Max original film follows an agoraphobic tech worker who discovers recorded evidence of a major crime at her Seattle tech company. Shot during the ongoing pandemic, our lead Angela (Zoë Kravitz) works from home and gets stuff done with the help of KIMI – a virtual house assistant a la Amazon’s Alexa. After being met with backlash when trying to report what could be murder, Angela realizes that she must do the one thing she fears the most, leave her apartment.
Though that won’t be the only trouble in her way as the city streets are filled with protests and those who are trying to stop her in secret. There’s no better time to get in on the Zoë Kravitz hype train as she will also soon be on the big screen as DC’s Catwoman in one of the most anticipated movies of the year, The Batman. In the meanwhile, give Soderbergh’s last two HBO Max films, Let Them All Talk and No Sudden Move, a watch before diving into KIMI.
KIMI premieres on HBO Max on February 10!
The Girl Before
Last seen as Ravonna Renslayer on Marvel’s Loki, screen veteran Gugu Mbatha-Raw is taking a step back from blockbuster properties with The Girl Before. A traumatized woman falls in love with an extraordinary minimalist house and the handsome architect who designed it. However, everything is not as it seems as she finds out that a woman previously died there and her story awfully looks like a re-run of said tragic events.
The Girl Before is a 4-part thriller adapted by J.P. Delaney, who also wrote the 2016 bestselling novel of the same name. Co-starring Jessica Plummer and David Oyelowo, the series has already premiered in the UK and other territories, with many praising its “hitchcockian” and psychological elements.
The Girl Before debuts on HBO Max on February 10!
Nightmare Alley
Looking to catch up on Oscar nominees before the big night on March 27? Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley is a notable contender not to be missed. Nominated for Best Production Design, Costumes, Cinematography, and Best Picture, hearing Nightmare Alley‘s name called out at this year’s ceremony seems likely. Lead by Bradley Cooper in “what can only be described as one of the most refined performances of his entire career,” it’s no surprise that the film has gained so much love.
An adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 novel of the same name, Nightmare Alley sees Del Toro fully explore film noir for the first time in his extensive career. In telling the story of conman who flew too close to the sun, meeting the face of god himself on the way up, Del Toro is able to meticulously craft a film that feels as if it was plucked right from the 1940s. To say the least, adult-oriented projects steeped in genre, with this much star power and budget, are becoming more of a rarity. It’s not too late to fix that though.
Nightmare Alley is available to stream on HBO Max starting February 1
