New Arrivals for Netflix June 2022

by Andrew J. Salazar
The main cast of the Umbrella Academy posing in the Season 3 poster, coming to Netflix in June 2022.

Netflix is keeping its original lineup stacked this summer, and June 2022 is offering plenty of variety. Those who’ve already finished the first volume of Stranger Things 4 will want to set their eyes on the next season of the critically acclaimed hit, The Umbrella Academy. The final season of Peaky Blinders has also finally hit Netflix after already premiering on the BBC, meaning that everyone else can now catch up with their fellow British fans in anticipation of the upcoming Peaky Blinders feature film. On another very special note, Netflix is showcasing new comedy specials from a mighty list of names this month, including Pete Davidson, Bill Burr, Snoop Dogg, and Cristela Alonzo. An all-new tribute honoring the late Bob Saget is now available to stream as well.

Original films to check out this month include Spiderhead starring Chris Hemsworth and Adam Sandler’s basketball sports drama Hustle. Additionally, the action-comedy The Man from Toronto, led by the unlikely duo of Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, will soon premiere on Netflix as a result of the new major Sony/Netflix deal. Starting this year, Sony films will stream on Netflix after their theatrical windows instead of Starz. However, in this case, The Man from Toronto will forgo a theatrical run and head straight to streaming, giving an extra boost to Netflix’s summer slate. Moving on to older and classic films, subscribers can now stream The Departed, Titanic, Léon: The Professional, and a collection of Mission: Impossible films.

Discover more on our monthly recs and check out the full list of everything coming to and leaving Netflix in June 2022 below. This month’s new arrivals for HBO Max and Disney+ can also be found right here on DiscussingFilm.

Our Recs:

Spiderhead

Spiderhead | Chris Hemsworth | Official Trailer | Netflix

Hot off the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, filmmaker Joseph Kosinski is already back with another sci-fi thriller more akin to his work on Oblivion. How does he have another film coming out not even a month after the release of his mega-blockbuster? Well, don’t forget that Top Gun: Maverick was originally supposed to release in 2020 before the pandemic hit. Adapted from George Saunders’ short story by Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Spiderhead follows inmates who volunteer for psychedelic experimentation at the hands of a maniac tech mogul in order to reduce their prison sentences. In a refreshing new turn, Chris Hemsworth goes all in as the film’s boastful villain. Miles teller reunites with Kosinski to lead this tale with the support of Birds of Prey star Jurnee Smollett.

Spiderhead premieres on Netflix June 17, 2022!

The Umbrella Academy: Season 3

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 | Official Trailer | Netflix

Netflix’s own hit comic book series is back and more ambitious than ever. Following the timeline-jumping adventures of season 2, The Umbrella Academy will now pit the Hargreeves siblings against The Sparrow Academy, the alternate universe versions of themselves. Elliot Page is taking on a more central role this season, as their character Vanya is now coming out as transgender and will be known as Viktor moving forward. The decision is one of the largest recent leaps in LGBTQ+ representation, making a clear statement that Hollywood productions can always go the extra mile to further ensure genuine inclusivity on-screen. With The Umbrella Academy also being one of Netflix’s highest-rated shows ever, Page’s role has risen as the “most high-profile transgender man on TV.”

Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy hits Netflix June 22, 2022!

The Man from Toronto

The Man From Toronto | Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson | Official Trailer | Netflix

Filmmaker Patrick Hughes, best known for The Hitman’s Bodyguard and the Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, returns with yet another action-comedy filled with assassins, guns, and blades. The unlikely duo this time is found in an everyday goofball played by Kevin Hart and a mob butcher played by Woody Harrelson. After seemingly checking in to the wrong Airbnb, which actually turns out to be a secret criminal hideout with hostages, Kevin Hart must pretend to be “the man from Toronto” in order to save his own skin… that is until the real man from Toronto comes looking for his imposter. The film was originally supposed to release in theaters but will now find new life on Netflix as what could very well be the streamer’s next comedy hit.

The Man from Toronto arrives on Netflix June 24, 2022!

Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado is another action masterpiece that deserves to be seen. Horror fans will want to take note of The Exorcist leaving at the end of the month too, which goes without saying is an absolute essential.
