New Arrivals for HBO Max June 2022

by Andrew J. Salazar
Oscar Isaac holds up a gun menacingly while sitting in a chair covered in white sheets in THE CARD COUNTER, new on HBO Max in June 2022.

HBO Max has a fascinating lineup of originals in June 2022. Subscribers are now finally able to stream the much-talked-about, albeit somewhat controversial documentary Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain, along with a few more treats for those with a taste for docs. On My Way with Irina Rimes follows one of today’s largest pop stars in Romania on her road to fame while Menudo: Forever Young retells the story of perhaps the most iconic boy band in Latin American history – the former now available to stream and the latter still coming later in the month. Aside from these rich docs, subscribers can now keep up with the Irma Vep remake series and look forward to the next season of Westworld just around the corner.

In terms of non-originals and classic films, HBO Max has a hot selection in June 2022 as well. From The Grand Budapest Hotel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, now’s the perfect time to rewatch or maybe witness these greats for the first time. Those who’ve recently become fans of Everything Everywhere All at Once especially need to see Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for Michelle Yeoh’s all-time performance alone. Additionally, Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter and Blue Bayou, an overlooked indie gem, both make their streaming debuts this month after premiering last year. And for the more old-school action fans, the original Rambo trilogy and Total Recall (1990) are now streaming too.

Read more on our monthly recs below along with the full list of everything coming to and leaving HBO Max in June 2022. This month’s latest arrivals for Netflix and Disney+ can also be found right here on DiscussingFilm.

Irma Vep

On a very unique occasion, french filmmaker Olivier Assayas (Personal Shopper) remakes his own film from 1996, Irma Vep, into a crime thriller miniseries of the same name for HBO. The premise stays mostly the same at its base concept but is given some modern updates to justify a new retelling. Alicia Vikander plays a troubled Hollywood star who travels to France to star as “Irma Vep” in a remake of the iconic silent film Les Vampires and soon loses her grasp on the line between fiction and reality. If it wasn’t already obvious, Olivier Assayas doesn’t hold back with going, even more, meta with his themes as this series is technically now the remake of a film that’s about being the remake of a classic film.

Catch new episodes of Irma Vep every Monday this June on HBO Max.

Westworld: Season 4

Westworld Season 4 | Official Trailer | HBO

The latest season of Westworld is seemingly setting out to screw with its fanbase now more than ever. Familiar faces such as James Marsden and Evan Rachel Wood are returning but playing entirely new characters. It was also previously said that Marsden would be playing a fictionalized version of himself! Meanwhile, Ed Harris will be playing an artificial version of the Man in Black this season and will be out for more blood, further complicating things for new characters played by Aurora Perrineau, Daniel Wu, and recent Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose. Jeffrey Wright, Thandiwe Newton, Tessa Thompson, and Aaron Paul all return and judging by the teaser, might even get to explore a new park modeled after the 1930s American Mafia.

Season 4 of Westworld hits HBO Max June 26, 2022!

Leaving HBO Max in June 2022

It is once again time to update those last-chance watchlists for some fan-favorite titles leaving HBO Max in June 2022. Starting with the first two Mummy films led by Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, action lovers will also want to check out The Scorpion King before it leaves too. Ridley Scott aficionados will want to check out Matchstick Men, the filmmaker’s only collaboration with Nicolas Cage. This makes for a great watch for the Cage fans who’ve just seen The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent as well. If looking for comedies, both Blades of Glory and Superstar boast underrated Will Ferrell performances and are still as hilarious as ever to this day. As always, this list will be updated as much as possible to reflect the “last chance” section of June 2022 that can be found on the HBO Max app.
