San Diego Comic-Con 2022 is a very unique year for Marvel and DC. The first proper convention since 2019 thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, many studios are choosing to have a smaller presence this year to test the waters on coming back to in-person fan events. This year, Warner Bros/DC and Marvel Studios are looking to bring the house down with exciting new reveals and announcements. From Black Adam to Shazam! Fury of the Gods to fans very first look at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, SDCC is one of the biggest weeks of the year for pop culture and this latest celebration isn’t looking to disappoint.

Yesterday, SDCC got a head start with the Marvel Studios animation panel. The door is wide open for more surprises today as both Marvel and DC are back presenting in their usual time slots. The two movie giants are looking to leave an impression on the dedicated SDCC crowd. With the previous success of online events like DC Fandome and Disney+ Day, many were doubtful of how relevant SDCC would be. Based on today’s events, these naysayers could very well be proved wrong.

You can find every new Marvel and DC update from SDCC 2022 below. Aside from all the juicy main details, we’ll include any exclusive footage descriptions straight from our own eyes at the panel itself!

SDCC 2022: Warner Bros/DC Panel

SDCC 2022: Marvel Studios Panel

Phase 4

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

New Plot Details: The Wakandans must fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. As they strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda. Namor and the Atlanteans appear to be the antagonists.

Cast: Michaela Coel has offically been added to the cast. Tenoch Huerta is confirmed to be play Namor.

Bonus Info: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will end Phase 4.

Release Date: 11 November 2022

Phase 5

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania

New Plot Details: The Lang/Van Dyne family must navigate the Quantum Realm and all of it’s dangers, including facing Kang The Conqueror. The film feels more serious in tone, but plays as a family adventure ensemble piece from the footage shown.

Cast: Bill Murray is now confirmed to star in the film. The character of Modok is also set to appear, but it is currently unknown in terms of casting.

Exclusive Footage Description: Scott Lang is now a celebrity and wrote a book about saving the world. His ego and fame has driven him away from his daughter Cassie and the rest of the family as they think he is pompous. The whole Lang and Van Dyne family is sucked into the Quantum Realm after a freak accident.

Janet Van Dyne leads them as she has previously survived these circumstances. The inside of the realm itself looks cosmic, with aliens and beats running rampant. Bill Murrary’s character is inside the realm and clearly met Janet in there before.

Meanwhile, Kang is also narrating from inside the realm and we see glimpses of action as he takes Cassie hostage. A brief look at Modok can also be seen, he is golden and robotic looking, comic accurately shooting lasers. In the final moment, Kang the Conqueror appears in his classic green and purple armour, although he is not blue.

Release Date: 17 February 2023

Secret Invasion

New Plot Details: Nick Fury is back on Earth and must now face the Skrull invasion, helped by Talos, Maria Hill and some other old friends.

Cast: Don Cheadle will return as Rhodey in the series.

Exclusive Footage Description: Rhodey (War Machine) makes several appearances out of armour. In the exclusive footage a first look at Emilia Clarke’s character who appears to be an agent of either SHIELD or SWORD was shown. A first look was also shown of Olivia Colman’s character who is an old ally of Fury’s who helps them go undercover when things go wrong. Fury ends up getting his original costume and eye patch back. Talos faces off against a room of Skrulls in human form.

Release Date: Spring 2023

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

New Plot Details: The story is centered around Peter Quill (Starlord) attempting to win over Gamora who is the new leader of The Ravengers. However, Quill must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them. We will also learn more of Rocket’s origin story, seeing him get taken as a baby raccoon and then raised by The High Evolutionary. The comedy appears to be more toned down in parts and overall the film appears to be a real tear jerker.

Cast: Maria Bakalova is playing Cosmo the Space Dog. Chukwudi Iwuji is confirmed to be playing The High Evolutionary.

Exclusive Footage Description: Quill keeps trying to remind Gamora of their love, but she reminds him that the Gamora he knew is gone and that she doesn’t even know his last name. Gamora also has a new hairstyle that fits her Ravenger look.

Baby Rocket is taken from a litter of other raccoons and is then experimented on. Rocket as we know him however is not seen in any of the footage shown. The High Evolutionary fights an Abilisk, the squid type monster seen in the opening scene of Vol. 2.

The song ‘Do You Realise?’ by Flaming lips plays, perhaps indicating the first song we have heard on Awesome Mix Vol. 2.

Groot is at his young adult stage, growing multiple arms in battle. There is an action sequence in which each Guardian (expect for Rocket) wears an individually coloured astro-suits in space. In another clip, The Guardians are seen in their comic accurate costumes.

Adam Warlock can be seen in the footage. He looks like the Sovereign race seen in Vol. 2, except he does have the green Soul Jewel (not to be confused with the Soul Stone).

Bonus Info: During the panel, Chukwudi Iwuji came on in costume as The High Evolutionary.
