New Arrivals for Prime Video June 2023

by Andrew J. Salazar
Jharrel Jerome stars as Cootie, a 13-foot-tall 19-year-old Black man in the new original series I'M A VIRGO coming to Amazon Prime Video in June 2023.

June 2023 is a good month to be a Prime Video subscriber. Aside from some exciting new Prime Video original series premieres, the streaming service is adding a wide collection of recent noteworthy films. But before that, the new Australian murder-mystery comedy series Deadloch, season 2 of the Canadian comedy series The Lake, and season 2 of the romantic comedy series With Love have already debuted on Prime Video this June, so subscribers might want to check those off their binge-watch lists before adding anything else.

Season 4 of the political action thriller series Jack Ryan starring John Krasinski is set to premiere at the end of the month. Along with this flagship title, Prime Video is also finally releasing the idiosyncratic comedy series I’m a Virgo on streaming. From writer-director Boots Riley, I’m a Virgo made waves earlier this year at the SXSW Film & TV Festival with its unique satirical commentary on class and modern superhero culture. Looking for some Prime Video original films to enjoy in June 2023 as well? The action-comedy Medellin and the Spanish romance My Fault are the options to choose from this month.

Moving on to the latest film additions to Prime Video’s revolving streaming library, the Oscar-nominated TÁR from writer-director Todd Field is a must-watch. Starring Cate Blanchett, Field’s film tells the story of a fictional music conductor named Lydia Tár who must wrestle with her high status of fame in the music world when accusations of misconduct come to light. The biographical romantic drama Spoiler Alert and the coming-of-age drama Armageddon Time are two films from last year that deserve a watch now that they’re easily available on Prime Video. On a different note, Michael B. Jordan’s Creed III is now on Prime Video which means the entire trilogy is streaming together for the first time as well.

Finally, it would be wrong not to mention that the breakout horror sensation M3GAN is coming to Prime Video on June 27. Blumhouse revitalizes the killer doll storyline with Allison Williams (Get Out), Violet McGraw (The Black Phone), and voice actress Jenna Davis at the forefront, resulting in one of the most successful horror films of the year so far. Read more on our monthly recs below and then check out the full list of everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Freevee in June 2023. You can also find out what’s new and about to be removed from Netflix, HBO and Max, and Disney+ right here on DiscussingFilm.

Our Recs:

Deadloch

Deadloch - Official Trailer | Prime Video

The Australian comedic duo Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney give their chaotic spin on the traditional murder mystery with Deadloch. Taking place in the sleepy town of Deadloch in Tasmania, preparations for the annual Winter Festival are brought to a screeching halt when a local football coach washes up dead on the beach. Eddie Redcliffe (Madeleine Sami), a detective from Darwin, is brought in to investigate but soon butts heads with the local hard-working Senior Sergeant  Dulcie Collins (Kate Box) and her lively junior Abby Matsuda (Nina Oyama). It’s a classic crime case scenario told with McCartney and McLennan’s unhinged comedic tastes. Whodunits are all the rage right now, so Prime Video is now looking to break apart from the mold with this female-led, hilariously raunchy crime comedy. The streaming service is releasing new episodes of Deadloch weekly until July 7, 2023.

New episodes of Deadloch debut every Friday on Prime Video in June 2023!

I’m a Virgo

I

The latest from filmmaker, musician, and activist Boots Riley is as wild as one would expect. Taking place in a heightened version of our reality, I’m A Virgo follows the journey of Cootie (Jharrel Jerome), a 13-foot-tall 19-year-old Black man living in Oakland, California. Hidden from the outside world by his Aunt Lafrancine (Carmen Ejogo) and Uncle Martisse (Mike Epps), Cootie longs for a more adventurous life. But what Cootie doesn’t understand is that as ready as he might be to see the world, the world may not be ready to see a giant Black teen walking the streets unbothered. This all changes when Cootie is accidentally discovered by a group of teenage activists who put him on a path of self-discovery, one that eventually leads him outside and face to face with the fascist Tony Stark-like crime fighter known as “The Hero” (Walton Goggins).

Just like Boots Riley’s first film Sorry to Bother You, I’m a Virgo expresses unfiltered social and political commentary through an absurdist lens. Impressively, Riley didn’t solely rely on CGI to bring the 13-foot-tall main character to life. Instead, forced perspective and a wide variety of creative sets and puppetry were also heavily used to frame Cootie as a giant. Overall, this Prime Video original series is bound to turn heads and could very well be one of the most-talked-about shows of the summer season. All seven episodes of I’m a Virgo are hitting the streaming platform at once, meaning that a binge might be in order to stay on top of all the discourse that is already on the way.

I’m a Virgo hits Prime Video on June 23, 2023!

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Season 4

Tom Clancy

Season 4 of Jack Ryan is confirmed to be its last, however, Amazon has already promised more to come from the Tom Clancy “Ryanverse.” In this fourth and final season, John Krasinski’s Jack Ryan goes from CIA analyst to Acting Deputy Director of the CIA. With this major promotion comes his toughest mission yet: uncovering a conspiracy within the CIA and stopping the convergence of the world’s most infamous drug cartel with a just as powerful terrorist group. Returning faces include Wendell Pierce as James Greer, Michael Kelly as Mike November, Betty Gabriel as CIA Acting Director Elizabeth Wright, and Abbie Cornish as Cathy Mueller.

Michael Peña of Ant-Man and Narcos: Mexico fame enters the fold as Domingo “Ding” Chavez, one of the deadliest operators the CIA has ever employed. Tom Clancy fans will recognize the name as Chavez plays a heavy role in numerous installments and adaptations of the Rainbow Six franchise. As such, Peña’s introduction in Jack Ryan Season 4 will serve as the launch pad for his own Prime Video original spin-off series. Not much is known about this new spin-off at the moment but things should be more clear by the end of Jack Ryan. The first two episodes of Jack Ryan Season 4 premiere at the end of June with two more new episodes releasing weekly until the series finale on July 14, 2023.

The first two episodes of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Season 4 premiere on Prime Video June 30, 2023!
