July 2023 has been a solid month for Netflix subscribers, and it’s not over yet. The most noteworthy Netflix original that’s still to come this month is the second half of The Witcher Season 3, which will be the last time fans see star Henry Cavill as the main monster hunter Geralt of Rivia. In the meantime, subscribers can enjoy the Spanish spin-off of the record-breaking Bird Box, aptly titled Bird Box Barcelona. U.S. moviegoers will recognize Babylon breakout Diego Calva and Barbarian‘s own Georgina Campbell in Bird Box Barcelona, whereas international audiences will certainly recognize Spanish actor Mario Casas. Another Netflix original film that’s sure to make waves on the streaming service in July 2023 is They Cloned Tyrone. Led by a dynamic trio of John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx, this dark comedy follows a twisted conspiracy made especially for genre fans.
In terms of new and exciting additions to Netflix’s revolving streaming library, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a must-see in July 2023. The animated sequel continues Dreamworks’ famous Shrek franchise in the most imaginative and vibrant ways, flaunting a new painterly animation style for the studio that combines elements of 2D and 3D art (not in the same way as Sony’s Spider-Verse series). Voice actors Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek Pinault, Harvey Guillén, Wagner Moura, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, and John Mulaney are all on top of their game here. Moving on, Netflix also just added the original Karate Kid trilogy (plus the 2010 remake), the Rush Hour trilogy, J.J. Abrams’ two Star Trek films, and James Cameron’s Titanic. Ride Along, starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, and Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, are two other worthy Netflix recommendations for July 2023.
Of course, we can’t wrap up without mentioning that part one of The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix in July 2023 as well. The legal drama, which stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as defense attorney Mickey Haller, is based on The Lincoln Lawyer book series by author Michael Connelly, and this second season specifically adapts The Fifth Witness. Neve Campbell, Becki Newton, Jazz Raycole, Angus Sampson, and Christopher Gorham also star. Our Recs:
Bird Box Barcelona
Part spin-off and part sequel, Bird Box Barcelona is Netflix’s latest attempt at expanding a hit franchise in an international market. 2018’s Birdbox, based on author Josh Malerman‘s 2014 novel of the same name, broke streaming records at the time for the platform, so it was only a matter of time until subscribers saw more stories set in this universe. With this next film taking place in Spain, audiences get a new perspective on the world as it’s plagued by a mysterious force that manipulates people’s negative emotions, leading them to commit suicide.
Survivors are forced to close their eyes or wear blindfolds to avoid this malevolent entity or “creature.” Bird Box Barcelona presents an equally exciting post-apocalyptic thriller that once again brings the most unlikely people from all walks of life together in order to survive. The film is written and directed by Spanish brothers Álex and David Pastor, known for other horror and sci-films like Carriers, The Last Days, and Self/less. If this film reaches similar success as the first film, then more Bird Box stories will definitely be in store on Netflix.
Bird Box Barcelona is now streaming on Netflix!
They Cloned Tyrone
The script for They Cloned Tyrone, written by Tony Rettenmaier and Juel Taylor, was originally featured on The Black List in 2019. For those unfamiliar with The Black List, it’s an annual collection of the boldest and most imaginative unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. Luckily, Netflix came along to distribute the promising project with writer Juel Taylor attached and set to make his directorial debut. An homage to the Blaxploitation films of the 1970s, They Cloned Tyrone is a colorful blend of dark comedy, sci-fi, horror, mystery, and satire.
Viewers follow the electric trio of Fontaine (John Boyega), Yo-Yo (Teyonah Parris), and Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) as they uncover a government cloning conspiracy in their predominantly Black community. Famed comedian David Alan Grier and Kiefer Sutherland, best known for the Fox drama series 24, appear in the supporting cast. They Cloned Tyrone is looking to be one of the most idiosyncratic Netflix originals of the year, and its fantastic leading trio makes it worth the watch alone. Plus, fans get a chance to see Teyonah Parris shine before she stars as Photon in Marvel Studios’ The Marvels later this year.
They Cloned Tyrone premieres on Netflix July 21, 2023!
The Witcher: Season 3 – Volume 2
Henry Cavill’s final three episodes as Geralt of Rivia are finally coming in the second half of The Witcher Season 3. The first part of the season ended with Geralt, Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan) heading toward an epic battle at the sorceress academy Aretuza. Judging from the trailer above alone, the second part of the season will waste no time jumping right into the action, making sure that the wait was well worth it for the fans.
Liam Hemsworth of Hunger Games fame will be replacing Cavill as Geralt in future seasons of The Witcher, and executive producer Tomek Baginski has teased that the actor switch will actually come with a “lore accurate” explanation. Meanwhile, series creator and showrunner Lauren Hissrich has described these last few episodes of season 3 as a “heroic sendoff” for Cavill. Many fans are speculating that Cavill’s Geralt will be swapped with Hemsworth’s from another universe via magic. All will soon be revealed as the final three episodes of The Witcher debut on the streaming platform towards the end of the month.
The Witcher Season 3 Volume 2 hits Netflix on July 27, 2023!

Leaving Netflix in July 2023
A few notable films are leaving Netflix in July 2023, especially for fans of the action genre. All four installments of the famous martial arts Hong Kong film series Ip Man are leaving Netflix on July 20. Donnie Yen, who stole John Wick: Chapter 4 earlier this year, stars as the iconic real-life Wing Chun master of the same name. Though not many in the West have heard of Ip Man, he was a true Kung Fu master of the highest regard who even went on to train Bruce Lee. This role took Donnie Yen’s name to new heights in action cinema, so it’s well worth the binge on Netflix.
Continuing with action films, Skyfall is saying goodbye to Netflix at the end of the month as well as Underworld. The former is still arguably the best entry in Daniel Craig’s 15-year run as James Bond 007 (though No Time to Die comes close). The latter, on the other hand, redefined the horror genre in the early 2000s when Kate Beckinsale’s Vampire warrior Selene first burst onto the scene kicking loads of werewolf butt. There’s more ground to cover, so check out the full list of everything leaving Netflix in July 2023 below.
