July 2023 is a good time to be a DC fan on Max. This month, the streaming service is showcasing two uniquely different original animated series, My Adventures with Superman and Harley Quinn Season 4. My Adventures with Superman offers a fresh take on the Man of Steel as he tries to balance his early crime-fighting days with his “regular” life as a new intern at the Daily Planet. Jack Quaid of The Boys and Scream fame voices Clark Kent/Kal-El while Alice Lee and Ishmel Sahid star as Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen respectively. Outside of the comic-book world, Max subscribers can enjoy the new original miniseries Full Circle. Writer Ed Solomon, best known for the Bill & Ted trilogy, Men in Black, and both Now You See Me films, once again teams up with prolific director Steven Soderbergh for another thrilling crime mystery in Full Circle.
When it comes to new additions to Max’s revolving streaming library, there’s plenty of ground to cover. First of all, fans who are excited for the upcoming animated film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, can prepare by binging the original live-action trilogy from the early ’90s as well as the 2007 animated film, TMNT. Eagerly looking forward to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer? Then now is the time to give his previous historical war film, Dunkirk, a rewatch. On that same note, 2018’s The Meg is back on Max just in time before Meg 2: The Trench hits theaters next month on August 4. The entire Rush Hour and Lethal Weapon franchises are also streaming again on Max. Other standout must-see additions to the streaming platform in July 2023 include Spike Jonze’s Where The Wild Things Are, Mike Mills’ 20th Century Women, and Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.
Going back to DC real quick, the live-action series Gotham Knights, which only aired for one season of 13 episodes on The CW before getting canceled after it was deemed not profitable, is coming to Max on July 28 along with Superman & Lois Season 3. Read more on our monthly recs below and then check out the full list of everything to and leaving HBO and Max in July 2023. You can also find out what’s new and is soon expiring from Netflix this month right on DiscussingFilm.
Our Recs:
My Adventures with Superman
Developed by Jake Wyatt (Steven Universe, Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus), with the help of producer Josie Campbell (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power), My Adventures with Superman presents a take on the DC icon that is unlike anything fans have seen in recent years. The Adult Swim series follows Clark Kent/Kal-El (Jack Quaid), Lois Lane (Alice Lee), and Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid) in their early days as fresh interns at the Daily Planet. The supporting voice cast includes Darrell Brown as Perry White, Kari Wahlgren as Martha Kent, Reid Scott as Jonathan Kent, Jason Marnocha as Jor-El, and Chris Parnell as Agent Slade Wilson.
Putting a strong focus on Clark and Lois’ young romance, with the perspective of Lois being front and center as the title suggests, this Superman adaptation roots its story in the core fundamentals and classic lore of the character. As seen with the show’s 2D animation style, My Adventures with Superman is heavily influenced by anime, perhaps more than any other previous DC show. One thing is for sure, right now is a good time to be a Superman fan with Superman & Lois Season 4 and James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy on the way. My Adventures with Superman Season 2 is also confirmed to be in the works, meaning that the Superman love is just going to keep on coming. In the meantime, this first season will run for 10 episodes with each entry first airing on Adult Swim and then releasing on Max the next day throughout July 2023.
My Adventures with Superman is now streaming on Max!
Full Circle
A Max original limited series, Full Circle is the second collaboration between writer Ed Solomon and director Steven Soderbergh after the 2021 crime thriller No Sudden Move. Max subscribers should be very familiar with Soderbergh’s name by now, as he’s directed multiple original films for the streamer, like Kimi and Let Them All Talk. Full Circle is the director’s first limited series created for Max, and it’s got enough star power to boot.
Featuring the talents of Timothy Olyphant, Claire Danes, Zazie Beetz, Dennis Quaid, Jharrel Jerome, Sheyi Cole, CCH Pounder, and Jim Gaffigan, the story at hand follows the mysterious kidnapping of a son that uncovers a whole web of interconnecting secrets across numerous characters and cultures in present-day New York City. Obviously, not everything is as it seems, as the seemingly happy family who have lost their son turns out to have a dark past that could be connected to serious crimes. Flaunting Soderbergh’s signature visuals, the mystery at the center of Full Circle should be worth a watch across all six episodes.
New episodes of Full Circle debut every Thursday on Max in July 2023!
Harley Quinn: Season 4
Harley Quinn is back for more debauchery and unhinged antics. The DC animated series has been going strong since its original debut on the now-dead DC Universe streaming platform, mainly thanks to a dedicated audience. People just can’t get enough of Kaley Cuoco and Lake Bell’s unfiltered, respective vocal performances as Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. The couple find themselves in totally different positions after Harley Quinn Season 3 and the Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special. Harley has now turned a new leaf by joining The Bat Family, meanwhile, Ivy has stepped deeper into the dark side by joining the Legion of Doom.
This change of pace, of course, makes Harley and Ivy the ultimate DC power couple. Loyal viewers will have to tune in to Harley Quinn Season 4 to find out if the Harlivy relationship will continue to grow, or split apart as a result of their two opposing sides. Familiar faces like Ron Funches as King Shark, Alan Tudyk as The Joker and Clayface, Diedrich Bader As Batman, Brianna Cuoco as Batgirl, Harvey Guillen as Nightwing, Sanaa Lathan as Catwoman, JB Smoove as Frank the Plant, and Giancarlo Esposito as Lex Luthor can all be expected to return. As always, new heroes and villains from the expansive worlds of DC are a given as well.
