February 2024 is another great month for Prime Video subscribers. The latest list of new arrivals is led by Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a Prime Video original series inspired by the hit 2005 action comedy of the same name starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane (Atlanta), Amazon’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith stars Glover and Maya Erskine in the titular roles. Erskine is a rising superstar, best known for co-creating Hulu’s Pen15 and starring in Man Seeking Woman, Insecure, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and more recently, Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai. Audiences follow the schemes of John (Glover) and Jane (Erskine), two highly skilled assassins who pose as a married couple in Manhattan, New York.
The streaming service is debuting a few special treats for Valentine’s Day 2024. Two new original rom-coms are premiering before the holiday, Upgraded and Five Blind Dates. Directed by Carlson Young, Upgraded follows the spicey dilemma of Ana (Camila Mendes), an ambitious art intern who is mistaken for her demanding boss Claire (Marisa Tomei) by handsome bachelor Will (Archie Renaux) when she’s upgraded to first class on a work trip.
Meanwhile, Five Blind Dates centers around Lia (co-writer Shuang Hu), a twenty-something who just inherited her family’s traditional Chinese tea shop. A fortune teller reveals a prophecy that says Lia will meet the love of her life in 5 dates, and this suitor will also help save her family business. Featuring a predominantly Asian cast, Five Blind Dates is looking to be a unique breakout hit on Prime Video in February 2024.
Of course, Jennifer Lopez’s This Is Me… Now: A Love Story has to be mentioned as well in terms of Valentine’s Day watches. This Is Me… Now: A Love Story is meant to be a narrative-driven visual companion piece to her upcoming ninth studio album, “This Is Me… Now.” Both the album and the Prime Video original film will be released on February 16. The film will reimagine key aspects and moments of Lopez’s publicly scrutinized love life in musical sequences set to her new songs. Jennifer Lopez is taking the streamer to new territory with this project, and her fanbase is definitely going to have a fun time diving into its many inside references and callbacks.
Many fan-favorite films have just hit Prime Video in February 2024 and there are still a few more on the way. Some notable favorites that just got added to the platform include Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Wes Craven’s first two Scream movies, and Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Subscribers can have a Will Ferrell-themed comedy marathon this month with Blades of Glory, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Strays, which makes its Prime Video debut after premiering in theaters last year. Speaking of comedies, one of last year’s most hilarious films, Bottoms starring Rachel Sennott and fresh Emmy-winner Ayo Edebiri, is finally coming to Prime Video on February 13. Those looking for more laughs can also check out Jenny Slate’s new original comedy special Seasoned Professional on February 23.
It cannot be ignored that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is hitting Prime Video on February 21. Directed by Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs. the Machines) and produced/co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Mutant Mayhem was one of last year’s best animated films. It was arguably snubbed for an Oscar nomination, but that doesn’t mean that its unique visual style and vibrant colors should be appreciated any less. Moving on, action fans will be happy to see that Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation is coming to the streaming service this month. Last but not least, David Lynch’s The Elephant Man is now available on Prime Video too. It’s one of the beloved filmmaker’s more underrated films that deserves just as much attention as his other gems.
Finally, I Am Not Your Negro is a powerful documentary that makes for a necessary watch this Black History Month.
