February 2024 is shaping up to be huge for Netflix. The live-action series remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender is the most anticipated Netflix original premiere of the month. Based on the hit animated Nickelodeon series of the same name, this new iteration of The Last Airbender is led by exciting diverse talent, including relative newcomers Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, and Ian Ousley as the main trio of Aang, Katara, and Sokka respectively. Dallas Liu (Pen15) takes on the fan-favorite role of Prince Zuko while veteran actor Daniel Dae Kim portrays his father, the villainous Fire Lord Ozai.
Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender also features Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Kim’s Convenience) as Uncle Iroh, Elizabeth Yu (May December) as the Fire Nation Princess Azula, Ken Leung (Lost) as Commander Zhao, and Amber Midthunder (Prey) as the Northern Water Tribe Princess Yue. Coming after the streamer’s successful live-action adaptation of One Piece, fans are hoping that Netflix’s The Last Airbender can capture a similar kind of magic that honors both the original animated series and a bold new creative vision. If this first season resonates strongly with subscribers, then Avatar: The Last Airbender could very well be the platform’s next big tentpole series.
Other Netflix original premieres to look out for in February 2024 include the romantic comedy Players and season 6 of the addictive reality show Love Is Blind, both of which arrive on Valentine’s Day. Players follows the love schemes of Mack (Gina Rodriguez), a sportswriter from New York City who enjoys playing matchmaker with her co-workers. When she meets Nick (Tom Ellis), the hottest news correspondent in town, she sets her sights on making the ultimate play to win him over. The British series One Day, based on the 2009 novel of the same name by David Nicholls, is bringing even more romance to Netflix this month. The 14-episode series centers around the decades-spanning love story of Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) and Emma Morley (Ambika Mod), two hesitant romantics who come together on the same day every year.
Looking for high thrills? Then the Japanese action drama series House of Ninjas and the sci-fi action flick Code 8 Part II should do the trick. Produced and led by Robbie Amell and Stephen Amell, Code 8 Part II is the sequel to their self-funded 2019 passion project. Now, with the support of Netflix, the Amell brothers have even teased the possibility of Code 8 Part III. Another exciting premiere that’s not to be missed is The Vince Staples Show. The Netflix original series follows a satirical version of “kind of famous and sort of rich” rapper Vince Staples’ life in his hometown of “The Beach.” Staples has proved to be one of the most outspoken voices in modern rap, making this Netflix original a must-see.
This is a fun month for animation on Netflix as well. Orion and the Dark, starring the vocal talents of Jacob Tremblay (Luca) and Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird), is the first DreamWorks animated film distributed by Netflix. Renowned filmmaker Charlie Kaufman (I’m Thinking of Ending Things) wrote the screenplay based on the children’s book of the same name by Emma Yarlett. Audiences follow a young boy named Orion (Tremblay) whose biggest fear is the dark. The literal embodiment of his worst fear, Dark (Hauser), comes to visit him and through their unexpected friendship, Orion learns to overcome his fears and everyday anxieties.
Aside from Orion and the Dark, DreamWorks fans can now stream How to Train Your Dragon 2 on Netflix in February 2024. Additionally, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken will be making its way onto the streaming service on February 20. Subscribers looking for more options to entertain the whole family can also stream 2021’s live-action/CGI Tom and Jerry film. Moving far away from family-friendly titles, Netflix just added some beloved horror films this month too. Ti West’s X, starring Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, and Kid Cudi, is now streaming and is worth a rewatch for those who love its sequel Pearl and are excited for its follow-up MaXXXine, which is releasing in theaters later this year.
Andy Muschietti’s It (2017) and the guilty pleasure that is Anaconda (1997) – starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, and Owen Wilson – are the two other fresh horror picks for this month. Netflix subscribers can now enjoy box office hits like Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, and Steven Spileberg’s Ready Player One in February 2024 as well. Two more February additions that cannot be ignored are the Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once and the beloved Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. Both films come from the popular indie distributor A24 and start streaming on February 23 and 24 respectively.
Finally, February 2024 will mark the first time the SAG Awards are streamed live on Netflix as part of their new partnership. The 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place on February 24 and will be streamed live from the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California starting at 8:00 p.m. EST / 5:00 p.m. PST. The 2024 SAG Awards nominations list can be found on our site.
