The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is celebrating the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday March 10, 2024 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California with returning host Jimmy Kimmel. The 2024 Oscars marks the fourth time that Kimmel is hosting the event, and it’s truly shaping up to be a night moviegoers will remember due to some anticipated historic wins. Eager viewers should take note that this year’s ceremony will be starting an hour earlier than usual on ABC in the U.S. at 7 pm ET/4 pm PT.
The 2024 Oscars will be honoring last year’s achievements in cinema, with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer heading into the ceremony as the most-nominated film with 13 nods. Nolan’s biographical/historical thriller became the second highest-grossing Rated-R movie of all time last year, which further fueled its momentum in the awards race. Many are predicting an Oppenheimer sweep at the 2024 Oscars, with Nolan and actors Robert Downey Jr. and Cillian Murphy’s first respective Oscar wins being heavily anticipated along with it also winning the biggest prize of the night: Best Picture. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema and composer Ludwig Göransson are all but guaranteed to win in their categories as well considering their recent awards streaks.
However, anything can happen on Oscar Sunday as people have learned all too well before. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things comes behind Oppenheimer with the second most nominations at 11 nods, followed by Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon with 10 and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie with 8. The Best Actress category is still perhaps too tight of a race to call, with it coming down between either Lily Gladstone or Emma Stone. If Gladstone wins for her powerful performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, then she will make history as the first Native American actor to win an Oscar in any of the acting categories. Speaking of the same movie, filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s nod for Best Director at the 2024 Oscars now makes him the most-nominated living director, having earned 10 nominations across his iconic career.
Another race that might be too close to call is for Best Animated Feature, with it either going to Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron or Sony’s hit sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as both wins have been winning back and forth in the awards season. If The Boy and the Heron wins, then it would mark Miyazaki’s second Academy Award win after 2001’s Spirited Away. There are plenty of first-time nominees at the 2024 Oscars as well, including Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer), America Ferrera (Barbie), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), and Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction).
This year’s Academy Awards will once again feature 5 previous acting winners introducing all of the acting nominees on stage for their category — the first time this has happened since 2009. These presenters include Nicolas Cage, Brendan Fraser, Matthew McConaughey, Al Pacino, Jessica Lange, Sally Field, Charlize Theron, Michelle Yeoh, Key Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lupita Nyong’o, Mahershala Ali, Sam Rockwell, and Christoph Waltz. Of course, everyone is excited to see actor Ryan Gosling’s first-ever live performance of “I’m Just Ken,” Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas performing “What Was I Made For?,” and the rest of the Best Original Song contenders as they take the stage.
Stay tuned as we update the full winners list for the 2024 Oscar live! Will the Oppenheimer sweep come true? Will other films like Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, or Celine Song’s Past Lives be lucky enough to squeeze in a win or two? Tonight we find out. You can also find the winners for the 2024 Golden Globes, Critics Choice, Emmys, and our very own DiscussingFilm Critic Awards right here on our site.
