Netflix is bringing the goods in May 2024. The hottest Netflix premieres of the month include Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts movie, Unfrosted, Jennifer Lopez’s epic sci-fi drama Atlas, and the first half of Bridgerton Season 3. The annual “Netflix Is A Joke” comedy festival is also taking place in May 2024. The streamer is going above and beyond to celebrate this occasion by hosting three live comedy events on the platform: Katt Williams: Woke Foke, the Roast of Tom Brady, and John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In LA. Mulaney’s Netflix special is described as a “comically unconventional show” that will be split into six live installments full of celebrity guests and surprises. Join beloved comedian John Mulaney as he takes viewers across Los Angeles with friends starting at 7 p.m. PT on Friday, May 3, with the remaining 5 episodes streaming nightly from May 6 to May 10, 2024.
Unfrosted marks the directorial debut of iconic comedian Jerry Seinfeld. The Netflix original film is set in 1963 Michigan as rivals Kellogg’s and Post Cereal race to create the next great breakfast pastry. Seinfeld stars as Kellogg’s employee Bob Cabana, who’s loosely based on the real-life businessman who helped create the Pop-Tart, William Post. Unfrosted partially follows true events, as Seinfeld takes the basics of how Pop-Tarts were actually invented and then goes off the rails with absurd comedy. Audiences meet a wild variety of chaotic characters along the way, including the one and only Hugh Grant (Wonka) as an actor playing Tony the Tiger. More funny faces and comedians appear in Unfrosted, like Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), Jim Gaffigan (Jim Gaffigan: Comedy Monster), Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Bill Burr (Old Dads), and James Marsden (Jury Duty).
Netflix subscribers looking to sink their teeth into science fiction will look no further than Atlas in May 2024. Megastar Jennifer Lopez portrays Atlas Shepherd, a brilliant data analyst who must put her hatred for artificial intelligence aside in order to team up with a renegade robot and save humanity. Simu Liu (Barbie), Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), and Mark Strong (Kingsman) star alongside Lopez in the sci-fi flick. The rest of May 2024 truly belongs to an impressive list of Netflix original series. Subscribers should keep an eye out for new shows like A Man in Full. The six-episode limited series comes from creator David E. Kelley (The Lincoln Lawyer) and executive producer/director Regina King (One Night in Miami…). The plot centers around real estate mogul Charlie Croker (Jeff Daniels) as he fights to defend his crumbling empire after facing sudden bankruptcy.
Bodkin is another new Netflix show to queue up this month. Will Forte (Nebraska), Siobhán Cullen (The Dry), and Robyn Cara (Trying) play a crew of true crime podcasters who travel to the small, Irish coastal town of Bodkin to investigate a series of mysterious disappearances that happened 25 years prior during one of the annual Gaelic fall festivals. As the group unravels the town’s dark secrets, they realize that they might be actually writing the next chapter in this true crime story. Executive producer/series creator Jez Scharf (The UnDream) assures that while Bodkin does have dark humor, it’s still more of a thriller series. Moreover, this is the first show to be produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company. The former United States President and First Lady are credited as executive producers on Bodkin. Their previous Netflix productions include Rustin and Leave the World Behind.
Speaking of thrillers, the Netflix original limited series Eric might satisfy that itch as well. Created by Abi Morgan (The Split), Eric centers around the collapsing world of famous puppeteer Vincent (Benedict Cumberbatch) as he desperately tries to find his missing son Edgar (Ivan Morris Howe) in 1980s New York. Having already created a popular children’s television show, Vincent becomes obsessed with the idea of building a seven-foot-tall puppet based on his son’s drawings of a blue monster named Eric. If he can get this huge puppet on TV, then maybe his son will find his way back home. However, Vincent’s crippling mental state pushes everyone away, putting him on a crazed journey across the city streets with only “Eric” by his side. This psychological thriller is shaping up to be a must-watch on Netflix in May 2024, with Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) leading at the top of his game.
Bridgerton is, of course, going to have Netflix subscribers mulling over its third season in May 2024. The streaming service is splitting Bridgerton Season 3 into two parts, with the first four episodes releasing on May 16 and the second half releasing on June 13, 2024. Writer Jess Brownell has replaced series creator Chris Van Dusen as the showrunner for this latest season and the already confirmed Bridgerton Season 4. Unlike the first two seasons, though, the Regency Era romance series is no longer following the order of the source material, which are Julia Quinn‘s Bridgerton novels. Bridgerton Season 3 adapts the fourth book in the franchise, titled Romancing Mister Bridgerton (2002). The plot now shifts to the “will they/won’t they” love story of Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), the third Bridgerton son, and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan), the youngest Featherington daughter.
To wrap things up, Madame Web is finally making its streaming debut on Netflix in May 2024. Thanks to the studio’s deal with Netflix, all Sony Pictures releases get added to the streaming platform soon after their theatrical runs. Last month, the hit rom-com Anyone But You joined Netflix. The Book of Clarence, a biblical comedy from director Jeymes Samuel and producer Jay-Z, is another Sony movie hitting the streamer this May. Moving on, Netflix is adding two nostalgic superhero films at the beginning of May 2024, Ang Lee’s Hulk and Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy. One new Netflix arrival that deserves more love is The Matrix Resurrections, which puts a unique spin on the legacy sequel. Subscribers also can’t go wrong with other notable additions like Shrek, Mortal Kombat (2021), Sing Street, Starship Troopers, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
