As summer starts to wind down, the Max streaming service is here to help those in need of their next binge. The hottest Max premiere of August 2024 is Industry Season 3. The HBO Original Series is all about the dirty ins and outs of high finance, as audiences follow rising bankers Yasmin (Marisa Abela), Robert (Harry Lawtey), Harper (Myha’la), and Eric (Ken Leung) inside the London offices of international bank Pierpoint & Co. In this latest season, the colorful cast of Pierpoint & Co. find themselves in the crosshairs of Lumi, a green tech energy company led by Sir Henry Muck (Kit Harington of Game of Thrones fame). Sarah Goldberg, best known for starring alongside Bill Hader as Sally Reed in HBO’s Barry, also joins the cast in Industry Season 3, making for delicious TV drama that Max subscribers won’t be able to resist.

Once again, Max is going to be home to some riveting documentary programming. In August 2024, the Max streaming platform will be welcoming the HBO Original Documentary Film Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes and the HBO Original Documentary Series Chimp Crazy. The former is co-produced by filmmaker J.J. Abrams and dives deep into the life of Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor through her own personal archives and newly found audio recordings. Meanwhile, Chimp Crazy follows Tonia Haddix, the “Dolly Parton of chimps,” in a Tiger King-like exploration of her controversial life as an exotic animal broker who’s spent years navigating around law enforcement and animal rights groups.

For fans of true crime, the Max Original Documentary Series Taken Together: Who Killed Lyrics and Elizabeth will be the top choice to stream in August 2024. Taken Together takes audiences through every piece of evidence in the mysterious 2012 double abduction of two cousins, 10-year-old Lyric Cook-Morrissey and 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins, in Evansdale, Iowa. It’s a tragic case that many people can still learn a lot from to this day. Moving onto sports, the HBO Original Sports Documentary Series Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Chicago Bears debuts on August 6, 2024. The Emmy-winning sports series is not to be missed, especially for lovers of NFL football and the Chicago Bears.

The HBO Original Drama Series City of God: The Fight Rages On is bound to stir plenty of conversations when it premieres on Max on August 25, 2024. The HBO show is part legacy sequel and part self-contained follow-up as it picks up the story of the ground-breaking Brazilian epic crime film City of God (2002) 20 years later in the year 2004. Original co-director Fernando Meirelles returns along with original star Alexandre Rodrigues. City of God: The Fight Rages On centers on the movie’s main character, Wilson “Rocket” Rodrigues, who now returns to the favela in his adult years as an accomplished photojournalist. The release of a young trafficker from jail thrusts the favela back into a power struggle, a free-for-all involving police, gangsters, militiamen, and politicians. Rocket must unite the local community to put a stop to this cycle of corruption once and for all.

August 2024 has plenty to offer in terms of classic and fan-favorite films returning to Max’s revolving streaming library. People who can’t get enough of megastar Robert Downey Jr., especially after the shocking announcement of his MCU Doctor Doom casting, can rewatch Guy Ritchie’s first Sherlock Holmes movie from 2009. Moving into the year 2010, the original How to Train Your Dragon animated film, written and directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, is back on the streamer this month too. This is a double whammy for fans looking forward to Sander’s upcoming DreamWorks movie The Wild Robot and the 2025 live-action How to Train Your Dragon film, which is being directed by DeBlois! Furthermore, Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice is now streaming on Max as well — the perfect timing before its sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hits theaters in September.

More Max streaming recommendations for August 2024 include Spike Jonze’s underrated live-action adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are and the timeless French romantic comedy Amélie, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Discover more on our monthly recs below, then check out the list of every film and television show coming to Max in August 2024. You can also find what’s new this month on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+/Hulu right here on DiscussingFilm.
