New Arrivals for Prime Video and Freevee August 2024

Prime Video remains one of the most reliable streaming services out there. After a big summer dominated by The Boys Season 4, one would expect Prime Video to slow down a bit. That’s not the case at all, though. The heavy hitters coming in August 2024 are primed to cater to a large majority of Prime Video subscribers. An exciting new animated take on DC’s Batman, a high-profile Amazon movie premiere, and the continuation of a major Amazon series are the main highlights of what’s getting added to Prime Video in August 2024. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

The latest comedy from director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, 2016’s Ghostbusters) is a streaming film titled Jackpot! Like Feige’s previous movie, Netflix’s The School for Good and Evil, Jackpot! will be making its way straight to a streamer. The Amazon film centers around Katie (Awkwafina), an aspiring actress in the near future who wins the lottery. The catch? In the future, if anyone kills Katie before sundown not only do they get the winning ticket, but they also face no charges. This forces Katie to partner with a bodyguard named Noel (John Cena) to make it til sundown. Plenty of laughs and thrills are all but guaranteed when the Prime Video Original Film Jackpot! hits the streaming platform on August 15, 2024.

In the Prime Video Original Series department, Batman: Caped Crusader is here to satisfy comic book and superhero fans. The long-awaited animated Amazon show comes from Bruce Timm, the creator of the legendary Batman: The Animated Series, with an all-star voice cast including Hamish Linklater (Midnight Mass) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Jamie Chung (Big Hero 6) as Harley Quinn, and the iconic Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets) as Catwoman. With both Matt Reeves (The Batman) and J.J Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) serving as executive producers, Batman: Caped Crusader promises a more adult take on Gotham City and the Dark Knight’s rogues gallery with its 1940s setting. Could this bold animated interpretation become a cultural juggernaut similar to Batman: The Animated Series? After the project originally got sold off by Warner Bros. Discovery, Prime Video is placing all bets that it does.

Last but not least, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 premieres on August 29, 2024. J.R.R. Tolkien devotees will always show up for anything Middle Earth, and this highly-anticipated second season comes with built-up hype from an extended break between The Rings of Power Season 1. Morfydd Clark returns to her role as Galadriel, while Tom Bombadil (Rory Kinnear) makes his long-awaited live-action debut here. Moreover, fans will finally get to see more of the evil Sauron (Charlie Vickers), who’s now operating openly in Mordor with his deceptive charm. Expect plenty of debate and discussion when The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 kicks off on Prime Video at the end of the month.

August 2024 just brought tons of classic movies to the Prime Video streaming service, too. Want to prepare for James Gunn’s Superman, which hits theaters next summer and stars actor David Corenswet as the titular Man of Steel? The streamer just added all of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies, as well as Superman Returns. Prime Video subscribers eager for The Rings of Power Season 2 can now also stream The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Hobbit trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. Meanwhile, for those looking to explore some bonafide all-timers, Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, Sam Riami’s Darkman, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, George Lucas’ American Graffiti, Brian De Palma’s Scarface, and 1994’s The Crow starring the great Brandon Lee are the top Prime Video streaming choices of August 2024.

Discover more on our monthly recs below, then check out the list of everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and its free ad-supported service, Amazon Freevee, in August 2024. You can also find what’s coming to Netflix, HBO/Max, and Disney+Hulu in August 2024 right here on DiscussingFilm.
