What’s coming to Netflix in August 2024? The real question should be: what isn’t coming to Netflix in August 2024? The streaming giant is closing out the summer in prolific fashion. Netflix will be adding everything from exciting new original shows to re-cuts of original movies and continuations of their biggest hits. Throw in plenty of classic films and early seasons of currently airing popular television shows and the streaming service has rarely seemed this alive. There are so many options for Netflix subscribers in August 2024, an impressive quality that other streamers won’t be able to keep up with this month.

The first big release of August 2024 is the Netflix Original Film, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie. Although most SpongeBob Squarepants content is over on Paramount+, Saving Bikini Bottom is an indicator that the stories of the lovable yellow sponge and his underwater friends might just spread out to other streaming platforms more frequently. At this time it’s unclear if this Netflix movie will be the first in a long partnership with Nickelodeon, but it sounds intriguing nonetheless. The story follows anthropomorphic squirrel Sandy Cheeks (Carolyn Lawrence) as she and SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) venture to Texas to save Bikini Bottom from a crisis. Parents are sure to appreciate a Netflix film that the whole family can watch together when Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie hits the service on August 2, 2024.

For a more adult audience, The Umbrella Academy Season 4 is looking to end the fan-favorite Netflix show on a high note on August 8, 2024. The Netflix Original Series, based on the comic books of the same name written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, continues to be led by Elliot Page, Tom Hooper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, and Aidan Gallagher. In its first season, The Umbrella Academy focused on a now-adult family of adopted super-powered siblings who had to overcome their past to avert the apocalypse. From there, the series went into as many zany directions as possible, time travel chief among them. Here’s hoping that this final season of The Umbrella Academy will satisfy both fans of the Netflix adaptation and the source material it was based on.

Emily in Paris Season 4 Part 1 is another Netflix show to queue up in August 2024. The comedy series, following an American named Emily (Lily Collins) who gets a job at a French marketing firm, has never been quite a hit with critics. Audiences, however, have spoken loud and proud, keeping the show near the top of the Netflix charts for quite a while. How splitting the fourth season into two parts will play out remains to be seen. Yet, if it captures the zeitgeist as much as the previous seasons, barring a large drop-off in viewers, Emily in Paris Season 5 seems all but guaranteed.

A brand new Netflix Original Series titled KAOS premieres on August 29, 2024. Marrying comedy and mythology, KAOS centers on what happens when Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) begins to distrust humans and those closest to him. As he grows paranoid over a prophecy about three humans, those three humans come together, uncovering their connection to Greek mythology. In the age of the success of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, it was only a matter of time before other streaming services started to milk the concept. Under the eye of series creator Charlie Covell (The End of the F***ing World), KAOS at least promises to be a fresh spin on Greek mythology.

Far and away one of the most anticipated Netflix Original Animated Series of late is Terminator Zero. Getting rid of the John Connor of it all, Terminator Zero is set in 1997, right before Judgement Day. Malcolm Lee (André Holland) is working on an AI to rival Skynet in Tokyo when a Terminator (Timothy Olyphant) comes back from 2022 to kill him. Thankfully, Malcolm is aided by future freedom fighter Eiko (Sonoya Mizuno), who also helps protect his promising AI (Rosario Dawson). Spearheaded by showrunner Mattson Tomlin (The Batman), all eyes are on this anime series to break the post-Terminator 2 slump when it premieres on Netflix on August 29, 2024.

Some other Netflix Originals to stream this month are A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, the latest crime-thriller series, and The Union, a new spy action comedy starring Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg. Outside of all this fresh original content, there are plenty of older favorites and more recent hits to keep Netflix subscribers satisfied in August 2024. Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon films are getting their own director’s cuts with new titles, Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness. Both of Snyder’s R-rated director’s cuts will be added to the streamer on August 2, 2024. Furthermore, the first season of the much-talked-about Interview with a Vampire television series is coming to Netflix on Aug 19, 2024, along with other AMC programs like Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches Season 1, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 1, and all eight seasons of Fear the Walking Dead.

The black-and-white version of Godzilla Minus One, subtitled Minus Color, is arriving on the streaming platform on August 1, 2024, for those who want to experience the Oscar-winning film in a brand new way. The entire Child’s Play/Chucky franchise also just got added to Netflix at the beginning of the month, along with The Next Karate Kid for those Cobra Kai fans who want to get their franchise fix before the final episodes air in November and the upcoming 2025 Karate Kid movie. Additionally, the beloved middle chapter of writer-director Ti West and actress Mia Goth’s X trilogy, Pearl, is coming to Netflix on August 16, 2024 — the perfect time to revisit given the recent release of MaXXXine. Finally, the arrival of the raunchy comedies White Chicks and Not Another Teen Movie can’t be ignored, as well as the addition of the high-adrenaline zombie flick World War Z.
