The Max streaming service is bringing tons of horror-themed surprises in October 2024. The streamer will, of course, be adding several horror films just in time for Halloween. This list includes two prominent Max original films, one of which has been waiting to premiere for a long time and is adapted from one of Stephen King‘s earliest books. A slew of original series, especially a very timely one about the Hollywood blockbuster landscape, also stand out from the Max streaming platform’s October 2024 line-up. So, without further ado, let’s dive into everything coming to HBO and Max in October 2024.
First up on the docket, and fitting for the Halloween season, is the new adaptation of Stephen King’s second novel, Salem’s Lot. Strangely, the James Wan-produced horror flick has been sitting on the shelf at Warner Bros. for quite a while, with little word to its release other than Stephen King’s online support and bewilderment at it taking so long. The streaming giant has finally decided to pull the trigger on the film about a small town overtaken by vampires. Horror fans can finally sink their teeth into this fresh take on Salem’s Lot when it debuts as a Max streaming movie on October 3, 2024.
Another prominent Max original film getting added to the streaming service is Caddo Lake. The horror movie, produced by the always topical M. Night Shyamalan, has an appropriately mysterious premise similar to other Shyamalan projects: an eight-year-old girl’s disappearance at the titular lake begins to tie in with similar cases throughout the years. Caddo Lake stars Dylan O’Brien and Eliza Scanlen, as well as Shyamalan’s Servant collaborator/actress Lauren Ambrose, and is set to premiere on Max on October 10, 2024.
Speaking of M. Night Shyamalan, his latest divisive thriller, Trap, will join Max’s streaming library on October 25, 2024. Whether or not Shyamalan’s filmmaking style aligns with a viewer’s personal taste, the one-man show put on by lead actor Josh Hartnett as he balances being both a caring dad and methodical serial killer trying to escape a pop concert is too electric not to recommend. Another recent polarizing movie with a standout lead performance, this time by actress Mia Goth, is A24’s MaXXXine. The Hollywood-set conclusion to writer-director Ti West‘s X trilogy hits Max on October 18, 2024, and could very well have a second wind in its life as a streaming film, especially during Halloween time.
From the HBO original series category, The Franchise should be on every Max subscriber’s watch list. The HBO show centers on a filmmaker and his crew, played by the likes of Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, and Billy Magnussen, who are trying to save their superhero movie based on an unpopular character in the midst of a chaotic cinematic universe. An obvious dig at the fluctuating state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the HBO series promises to be an even more satirical look at superhero blockbusters than the likes of The Boys. The Franchise starts its weekly rollout on HBO and Max on October 6, 2024.
The second season of the charming Gremlins animated series, whose first season debuted to rave reviews, premieres on Max on October 3, 2024, with the new title: Gremlins: The Wild Batch. Other television shows set to debut this month include the third and final season of the HBO original comedy series Somebody Somewhere. The season kicks off on October 27, 2024, hitting Max on the same date. An HBO original documentary series, Breath of Fire, aims to examine the rise and history of Kundalini yoga when it starts its own weekly rollout on October 23, 2024. The last series of note is the psychological political thriller The Confidante, debuting on October 11, 2024.
If there’s one thing Max is known for, it’s repertory content, and the streamer will have plenty this month, with a particular focus on horror. The monster mash of Freddy vs. Jason is a seasonal classic. The first five Nightmare on Elm Street films will be there for those who aren’t too fond of sleeping at night. Meanwhile, for those subscribers looking for a more thoughtful take on modern horror, Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep just got added to Max this month as well, along with multiple movies from The Conjuring universe and Andy Muschietti’s It duology. Additionally, fans who just enjoyed Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in theaters can now stream Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride on Max this month from the comfort of their own homes.
There are plenty of treats, no tricks, for Max subscribers this month.
