The HBO and Max April 2025 list of new arrivals is one step ahead of the streaming competition, featuring the hotly anticipated premieres of two returning shows. Firstly, Hacks Season 4 premieres on April 10, 2025. The 9x Emmy-winning Max original series is the most critically acclaimed program the streamer has released so far. Veteran stand-up comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her partner-in-crime head writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) are back. But this time, tensions are at an all-time high as the pair try to launch their new late-night show, which would make comedic history. Never has Deborah taken on a stage of this size in her iconic career, raising the stakes for the already-hilarious Max show.
Next up for the Max streaming service is The Last of Us Season 2. Based on the beloved video game franchise of the same name from Naughty Dog and PlayStation, The Last of Us follows survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal) and the young Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they make their way across a post-apocalyptic Earth ravaged by spore-infested creatures resembling zombies. The second season will adapt the topical second game in the series, The Last of US Part II, introducing the controversial character of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) into the fray. How audiences will react to Abby in the HBO adaptation remains to be seen.
Regardless if The Last of Us Season 2 stirs just as much controversy as the second game, one thing is for sure: everyone will be tuning into the HBO original series when it debuts on April 13, 2025. The last original coming to HBO and the Max streaming platform this month is The Rehearsal Season 2. Avant-garde comedian Nathan Fielder‘s particular sense of humor is not for everybody. Yet, for the faithful, he’s the comedic gift that keeps giving. The first season of the experimental HBO docu-comedy series centered on Fielder ostensibly helping real people do elaborate practices, aka rehearsals, for tough life events… before it evolved into something wonderfully dark.
Coming after Nathan Fielder’s recent off-kilter comedy program, The Curse, fans could not be more excited for whatever he’s got cooking with the second season of The Rehearsal. The HBO show makes its return on April 20, 2025. While no Max original films are getting added to the streamer this month, two recent A24 movies will be added to keep Max subscribers satiated. The first from the treasured indie distributor is Y2K, the feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live alumn Kyle Mooney. A chaotic riff on ’90s nostalgia that follows an apocalyptic machine uprising on the last night of 1999, Y2K is led by fresh-faced actors like Jaeden Martell (It, Arcadian) and Rachel Zegler (Snow White, West Side Story).
The next Max streaming recommendation for April 2025 is Babygirl, the acclaimed A24 erotic thriller starring the great Nicole Kidman (Holland, The Perfect Couple) and Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw, Triangle of Sadness). Plenty of other familiar favorites and older classics like James Cameron’s The Terminator, James Mangold’s Logan, Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun will be arriving at the top of the month as well.
