With May 2025 rolling in, two wings emerge: warmer weather and more television and movies to stream. The HBO and Max May 2025 list of new arrivals is making an impressively strong showing for the early summer season. One of the most notable titles coming to the streamer this month is not a Max Original film, but rather an awards favorite: Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist. The 3x Oscar-winning A24 period drama follows the immigration of Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth (Adrien Brody) to Philadelphia in 1947, and his subsequent disillusioning experience with the American Dream. Featuring staggering supporting performances from Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones, The Brutalist is a must-see for Max subscribers when it arrives on May 16, 2025.
Next up on deck is a brand-new Max Original series from creators J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan (The Walking Dead, Shameless), called Duster. The Max show stars Josh Holloway (Yellowstone, Lost) as a skilled getaway driver caught in the middle of an escalating war in the 1970s Southwest. The FBI’s first Black woman agent (Rachel Hilson) recruits him to help bring down a powerful crime syndicate, forcing him to reevaluate his morals. Without any (apparent) supernatural or science fiction elements, this series looks like an interesting departure for J.J. Abrams. Featuring the great Keith David in a supporting role, Duster premieres on Max on May 15, 2025, with new episodes airing weekly thereafter.
Also eagerly awaited is the HBO Original film, Mountainhead. Written and directed by Jesse Armstrong, known for his work on Succession, Mountainhead is poised to be a laugh-out-loud smash with his target audience. The movie stars Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef, and Corey Michael Smith (Saturday Night) as a group of four billionaire friends who have an isolated get-together at a fancy, snowy mountain-top estate, right as an international crisis unfolds before their eyes. The satirical comedy feels very much in line with Armstrong’s and filmmaker Adam McKay’s style, which is sure to draw in viewers when it premieres on HBO and Max on May 31, 2025.
The next Max series to be discussed is the second season of the Conan O’Brien travelogue show Conan O’Brien Must Go, where he sees incredible sights and interacts with fans across the globe. The second season debuts on May 8, 2025. Beyond that, Pee-Wee as Himself is not to be missed when it comes to Max on May 23, 2025. The late Paul Reubens peels back the curtain on his private life and the creation of his Pee-wee Herman character in this two-part HBO Original documentary series, which was compiled from 40 hours of interviews and thousands of hours of archival footage. Since its Sundance 2025 premiere, Pee-Wee as Himself has been praised for beautifully capturing Reubens’ final moments.
The Max streaming service would be worse off without the Sex and the City girls to dazzle new audiences and loyal fans alike. That’s why they have plenty to look forward to when And Just Like That… Season 3 premieres on May 29, 2025. Although critical reception to the Sex and the City continuation series has been mixed, fans have been delighted by the return of Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, and all the fresh faces they’ve become acquainted with. This third season of And Just Like That... is promised to be as chaotic as ever, so dedicated Max subscribers are going to have plenty of drama and high-life antics to dig into in the coming weeks.
Of course, a streaming giant like Max is nothing without a catalog of fan-favorite and classic films. Arriving at the top of May 2025 are the Marlon Wayans-led horror spoof movies A Haunted House and A Haunted House 2 to deal out a healthy dose of crude laughs. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind boasts a legendary cult status and should be finally checked off the watch lists of curious moviegoers when it gets added to the Max streaming library this month. DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar trilogy will also be available for the whole family in May 2025, while Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure can provide context for viewers unfamiliar with the character who want to watch the new HBO documentary.
