When Violent Night hit theaters back in 2022, its gleeful blend of genuine holiday sentiment and brutal action, courtesy of David Leitch’s 87North Productions, won audiences over. Before that, almost no one predicted that David Harbour‘s battle-hardened Santa Claus would become a new Christmas favorite. More and more casual moviegoers and action aficionados alike revisit the film every holiday season, building out a dedicated fanbase. Four years later, returning director Tommy Wirkola is preparing to deliver an even bigger follow-up with Violent Night 2.
Switching gears from the luxurious mansion of the first movie to a sprawling shopping mall, the upcoming sequel finds Santa himself somehow on the Naughty List. Stripped of his magical powers, he must now rediscover the true meaning of Christmas as he takes on a ruthless mall gangster (Jared Harris) with the help of none other than Mrs. Claus (Kristen Bell).
Speaking with DiscussingFilm to celebrate the explosive first trailer for Violent Night 2, filmmaker Tommy Wirkola (Netflix’s Thrash, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) reflected on the unexpected legacy of the original movie and what made returning to this version of the Santa Claus myth worthwhile.
The Growing Fanbase of the First ‘Violent Night’
“The fact that it comes alive again every Christmas has really been a treat,” Tommy Wirkola says of the first Violent Night film. “The fact that people have taken the time and made this movie a part of their Christmas rotation is a real honor.”
Rather than rushing into a sequel, Wirkola explained that the creative team, including writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller as well as producers David Leitch and Kelly McCormick, spent considerable time figuring out exactly how to continue the story.
Tommy Wirkola: “It took a while to come up with a game plan. We had a few ideas that we played around with that didn’t go anywhere. Once we had the big idea, this sequel allowed us not to simply make the same movie again, but really expand on the myth of the character and the journey he goes on.”
The Challenge of Making Sequels
Having previously directed at least one sequel in his filmmaking career with a follow-up to his 2009 breakout hit Dead Snow, Wirkola drew upon that experience but was determined not to simply recreate what audiences loved the first time around.
“The tone of the first movie really set it apart — the fact that we mixed this R-rated action movie into a Christmas movie,” Wirkola explains. “We wanted to honor that, but at the same time I didn’t want to play it safe, so I really wanted to push it.” As for what moviegoers can expect in Violent Night 2, Wirkola teases that he pushed for “a bigger gallery of characters” whose arcs are going to be “more intertwined with Santa’s.” This is opposed to the first film, wherein most of the humor came from how disconnected and in disbelief the supporting cast was from Harbour’s gruffed Saint Nick.
David Harbour’s Embrace of Santa Claus
The philosophy of further connecting the supporting cast to Santa’s personal arc extended beyond Violent Night 2‘s script and into conversations with returning star David Harbour (Stranger Things, Thunderbolts*), who has become deeply invested in the role in the years since the first movie.
Tommy Wirkola: “David especially loves this world and this character and takes it very seriously. He really respects the fans; he told me he’s been talking to various fans at comic-cons and hearing what they wanted to see. So, we certainly had those ideas of what people were craving in the back of our minds when making this movie. However, we still wanted to trust our gut and instinct to make something brand new.”
Kristen Bell Joins ‘Violent Night 2’ as Mrs. Claus
One of the sequel’s biggest additions is the long-awaited introduction of Mrs. Claus, played by Kristen Bell, best known for her hit TV shows Veronica Mars, The Good Place, and more recently, Netflix’s Nobody Wants This. Although the filmmakers initially considered showing Mrs. Claus in the original film, Wirkola says they ultimately decided to save her until she could play a much larger role.
“We talked about having a cameo for Mrs. Claus in the first movie, though we didn’t end up doing it,” Wirkola reveals. “For the sequel, we said that if we wanted to involve Mrs. Claus, it couldn’t be just a cameo. She had to be a part of the story.” Plus, according to Wirkola, Kristen Bell’s Mrs. Claus is every bit as capable a warrior as David Harbour’s Santa.
Tommy Wirkola: “We wanted Mrs. Claus to be an equal to Santa. As you can see in the trailer, she kicks ass. Kristen brought so much heart, humor, and life to the part. She and David Harbour go way back. We get to see them fighting separately and then together as a team. She was a joy to work with. I think people will be surprised when she goes into action ass-kicking mode. Kristen kills it. Mrs. Claus has a great part to play in this whole story.”
The New Supporting Cast of ‘Violent Night 2’
The sequel boasts an impressive supporting cast led by Chernobyl and Foundation star Jared Harris, who plays the film’s main villain Mason, a dangerous gangster who comes into conflict with Santa. Violent Night 2 also includes the talents of Joe Pantoliano, Daniela Melchior, Maxwell Friedman, and Andrew Bachelor, all of whom Wirkola praised alongside the first film’s memorable villain, played by John Leguizamo.
Tommy Wirkola: “John is obviously an amazing, talented actor. He’s been part of my favorite movies just as a film lover, and working with him was a joy. I can’t wait to see him in The Odyssey in IMAX. The same goes for this one with Jared Harris, Joe Pantoliano, and Daniela Melchior. [Violent Night 2] is full of great actors that were a complete joy to work with.”
Turning a Shopping Mall Into a Western-Style Arena
In Violent Night 2, instead of a mansion, much of the action unfolds inside a sprawling shopping mall, a setting Wirkola says has been part of the sequel’s DNA since the earliest brainstorming sessions.
Tommy Wirkola: “We knew we wanted to set it in a mall like so many other Christmas movies before us. The mall in this is almost like a Western town. Santa is stripped of his powers and meets all these shop owners that are being extorted by Jared Harris’ evil gangster. So, he gets intertwined in this story while at the same time being on his own quest of rediscovering who he is and his powers.”

According to Wirkola, the unique location of a massive shopping mall also allowed the sequel to top the first film’s action sequences, placing out-of-the-box fight scenes throughout the many different storefronts.
Tommy Wirkola: “The mall is very Christmas-y. What’s great about a mall is you have all these different kinds of shops and locations, so we can have great settings for the action set pieces we came up with. We really explore the vast nature of a mall with the way we set up the fights. It was fun; we shot it in a mostly abandoned mall in Canada that only had a few stores still going. We had a big space to play around with.”
Inventing New Holiday-Themed Action Beats
When asked about his favorite moments from Violent Night 2, Wirkola teased exactly the kind of over-the-top action fans have come to expect. “There’s one fight in particular that I love in the kitchen of a cookie store,” he reveals. “We get to use a lot of instruments that go into baking cookies. That was a lot of fun!”
Additionally, Wirkola hints that viewers will finally get to see another fan-favorite part of Santa’s mythology pulled into the action. “We get to see the reindeer in action a little bit as well, which was tricky to find out how to give them their own little action beats.”
If the first trailer is any indication, Violent Night 2 looks poised to deliver even more inventive holiday carnage. The mythology surrounding David Harbour’s Santa Claus (and now, Kristen Bell’s Mrs. Claus as well) is going to be expanded in ways the original only hinted at. For fans who have added Violent Night to their annual Christmas traditions, director Tommy Wirkola seems intent on making sure the sequel earns a place right alongside it.
