With Christmas just around the corner, Disney+ and Hulu are adding tons of new films and shows for the whole family to enjoy in December 2024. For Disney+, the Inside Out spin-off show Dream Productions is a must-see. Set between the two Inside Out movies, the animated Disney+ original series from Pixar follows two ambitious dream directors (voiced by Paula Pell and Richard Ayaode) who are trying to produce the next big tween-dream for Riley. Featuring appearances from Inside Out voice cast members such as Amy Poehler and Lewis Black, Dream Productions will be a surefire hit with families when all 4 episodes debut on the streaming service on December 11, 2024.
The second animated series hitting Disney+ in December 2024 is What If…? Season 3. Featuring Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher, the animated series is known for exploring various multiversal threads throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show’s anthology nature has been hit-or-miss for some fans, as has the animation style, but viewership-wise, it’s done very well for the streaming platform. The Disney+ show will tackle new wacky territory in its third and final season, with a Western-themed Shang-Chi episode and an anime-inspired episode that sees the Avengers piloting mechs to fight a bunch of Hulk-like kaiju, titled “Go-Avengers: Heroes of the Gamma War,” among the highlights. Storm from the X-Men will also be seen wielding Mjolnir this season!
Impressively, 35 MCU cast members will be reprising their roles in What If…? Season 3, which premieres on December 22, 2024. In honor of the holiday season, new episodes will be released each day afterward. Moving on to another Disney franchise, Lucasfilm’s latest streaming series, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, is already off to a strong start on Disney+. Set around the same time as The Mandalorian and Ahsoka post-Return of the Jedi, Skeleton Crew follows four kids marooned in a galaxy far, far away as they unwittingly embark on a whimsical adventure.
Taking a page from the Stranger Things retro 1980s playbook, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew comes from long-time writing partners Christopher Ford and Jon Watts, the latter of whom directed the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy. Featuring an esteemed stable of directors, including David Lowery (The Green Knight), Lee Isaac Chung (Twisters), and the Daniels (Everything Everywhere All at Once), as well as a few big-name actors like Jude Law, Nick Frost, and Kerry Condon, Skeleton Crew boasts great potential. Whether or not this Star Wars show can overcome looming franchise fatigue remains to be seen, though. On a brighter note, K-Pop icon Jung-Kook just dropped the first season of his new 3-episode Disney+ series, Jung-Kook: I Am Still — The Original.
Doctor Who fans, rejoice! In advance of the Season 15 premiere next year, the holiday special Doctor Who: Joy to the World will air, appropriately, on Christmas Day. Ncuti Gatwa reprises his role as the titular Time Lord. However, this time, he’s joined by Nicola Coughlan of Bridgerton fame, who makes a special appearance as the Doctor’s companion. Moreover, the Christmas special is written by none other than veteran Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat. The Doctor Who Christmas episodes are always a treat for diehard fans, and now Disney+ subscribers can join in on the fun. Another Christmas special to queue up is The Simpsons Christmas Double Episode, which airs on the streaming platform on December 17, 2024.
While the December 2024 additions for Hulu may be light, there are still some notable highlights that Hulu subscribers should take advantage of. For those still on the glorious highs of Gladiator II, Ridley Scott’s original Gladiator film is now available to stream. Feeling darkly romantic, or perhaps nostalgic? The whole Twilight Saga just got added this month. Alternatively, if the mood strikes for an original horror movie, Cuckoo, led by Hunter Schafer of Euphoria fame, makes its Hulu streaming debut on December 17, 2024. Those feeling nostalgic enough for a childhood classic, or three, can now stream the live-action Diary of a Wimpy Kid trilogy as well.
