New Arrivals for HBO Max October 2022

by Andrew J. Salazar
Justin Long crawls away from terror holding a flashlight in total fear while stuck underground in BARBARIAN coming to HBO Max in October 2022.

HBO Max has a very timely treat for horror fans in October 2022. Just in time for Halloween night, subscribers will be able to enjoy one of this year’s largest breakout hits in the genre, Zach Cregger’s Barbarian. The original horror tale has built quite a reputation mainly from word of mouth and a very positive critical consensus, resulting in an impressive box office that is just about to reach 40 million worldwide, multiplying its 4 million budget tenfold. Needless to say, you would have to be crazy not to stream Barbarian on HBO Max in October 2022, whether it be your first time or going back for seconds.

Moving away from horror, the second most anticipated title on HBO Max this October is the season premiere of the next installment of The White Lotus. The show just swept the Limited Series category at the 2022 Emmys, winning 5 statues total for Best Limited Series, Supporting Actress (Jennifer Coolidge), Supporting Actor (Murray Barlett), and Directing and Writing for series creator Mike White. Season 2 moves the exotic getaway antics from Hawaii to an exclusive Sicilian resort, with new visitors played by F. Murray Abraham (who was also just nominated for an Emmy for voicing Khonshu on Moon Knight), Michael Imperioli of The Sopranos fame, and the one and only Aubrey Plaza.

Read more on our monthly recs below and see the full list of everything coming to HBO Max in October 2022 as well as everything leaving the service this month. You can also find what’s new and about to expire from Disney+ and Netflix this October right here on DiscussingFilm.

Our Recs:

Folklore: Season 2

Although this HBO Asia original anthology series has been released for some time, it is only now available to stream on HBO Max, and just in time for the horror season’s peak. Folklore showcases multiple horror stories from prominent or rising Asian filmmakers, all with a focus on local superstitions or myths from their designated countries. More often or not in the West, Asian tales are just lumped into one category, but this program shines a light on cultural uniqueness.

Both seasons of Folklore are on HBO Max, and jumping back and forth between each individual entry makes no difference since it’s an anthology. Season 2, specifically, features tales from Taiwan and the Philippines, while Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia are highlighted across both editions. If you’re looking to grow your experience with the genre, especially with international horror, then look no further than Folklore. As they say, the best stuff always comes from outside of Hollywood.

Folklore Seasons 1 & 2 are now streaming on HBO Max!

Barbarian

What is without a doubt one of the most unpredictable horror films of the year, Barbarian works best when you know little to absolutely nothing going in. Thanks to a successfully vague and mysterious marketing campaign, the film has soared to new heights and is still attracting curious minds to the box office. If you would rather wait until Halloween weekend though, HBO Max has got you covered.

All that needs to be known about Barbarian is that an unfortunate series of events kicks off when two unlikely strangers discover that they’ve mysteriously booked the same Airbnb at the same time in a shady neighborhood. It was recently reported that no one in Hollywood wanted to make Barbarian, with both NEON and A24 even passing it over, which just makes this film’s long journey the latest perfect example of how powerful horror can be when more than enough faith is put into it.

Barbarian hits HBO Max October 25, 2022!

The White Lotus: Season 2

Season 2 of the fan-favorite anthology series moves the setting from Hawaii to Italy. The White Lotus Sicily boasts all the luxury you could want, and double the drama. Jennifer Coolidge reprises her Emmy-winning role and is now joined by F. Murray Abraham, Michael Imperioli, Aubrey Plaza, Cameron Babcock, and Haley Lu Richardson.

Similar to the first season, we’ll follow new groups of vacationing, troubled families as their personal lives cross over in more than a few unexpected ways during their stay at the White Lotus. Ultimately, they are all bound to leave as different people from when they first arrived. Could The White Lotus Season 2 see the same award-winning success as before? We’ll soon know for sure.

The White Lotus Season 2 debuts on HBO Max October 30, 2022!

Leaving HBO Max in October 2022

There are plenty of must-see horror films to catch on HBO Max before they expire from the service at the very end of October 2022. For starters, 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later are not to be missed, the same goes for Rob Zombie’s House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects if you’re in the mood for some killer double features. The Blair Witch Project is another iconic release that every horror fan should at least see once. More recent hits like The Purge and Annabelle: Creation will be leaving as well.

Moving away from horror, James Mangold’s The Wolverine will be moving out of HBO Max once again. A slew of Comedy Central favorites like Key & Peele, Nathan For You, & Reno 911! will be departing too, which might be confusing to many subscribers but they will probably be back eventually as a result of complicated streaming service contracts. There’s way more to cover, so check out the entire list of everything leaving HBO Max in October 2022 below.
