BAFTA Film Awards 2023: The Nominations

by Andrew J. Salazar
A row of bronze metal BAFTA masks as trophies for the 2023 BAFTA Film Award nominations.

The British Academy of Film and Television (BAFTA) has announced its nominations for the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards. The most prominent European-based voting group with 7,000 members across the UK and the world, BAFTA is also one of the few major associations to select their awards with the input of a limited jury. The 2023 BAFTA Film Awards are set to honor the best in global cinema while also spotlighting British contenders, bringing them to the forefront of the greater awards season race. Categories like Best British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer set this ceremony apart from any other in the year. The 76th edition of the BAFTA Film Awards will be hosted by prolific actor Richard E. Grant and will take place on Sunday, February 19 2023 – just 3 weeks ahead of the Oscars.

Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front absolutely dominated the nominations for the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards with a total tally of 14, including Best Film, Best Director for Edward Berger, Best Supporting Actor for Albrecht Schuch, and Best Cinematography for James Friend. Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inisherin then both tied in second place with 10 nods each, further proving their assured success in the 2023 Oscars race. Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis then came in third place with 9 BAFTA film nominations, followed by Todd Field’s Tár in fourth place with 5 nods. Finally, this year’s EE rising star award will be handed out to one of the following actors: Sheila Atim, Naomi Ackie, Emma Mackey, Aimee Lou Wood, and Darryl McCormack. Another unique quality about the BAFTA Film Awards, this is the only title that is voted on by the public in the UK.
