DiscussingFilm Critic Awards 2023: The Winners

Founded in 2019, the DiscussingFilm Critic Awards (DFCA) is our very own celebration of the most worthy and impactful films of the year. The DFCA voting body consists of a diverse range of highly established film critics, awards pundits, and influential voices from around the globe. The winners for the 2023 DiscussingFilm Critic Awards are finally here thanks to this dedicated voting group, which now includes bold voices from right here at DiscussingFilm and major outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, The Wrap, and much more. Follow along in the official winner announcements of what is now our fourth annual edition of the ceremony.

The top winners of our 3rd Annual DiscussingFilm Critic Awards were led by Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, Pablo Larraín’s Spencer, and Julia Ducournau’s Titane. Now, Everything Everywhere All at Once dominated the winners for the 4th Annual DiscussingFilm Critic Awards with a final tally of 7 wins, earning half of its 14 total nominations. This includes Best Picture, Best Director for the Daniels, Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, and Best Supporting Actress for Stephanie Hsu. The beloved film is expected to keep carrying strong in the current awards season, and these dominating results are just the latest testament to its universal love.

Coming in second was a tie between Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Nope with 3 wins each. Pinocchio was able to shine in two categories outside of Best Animated Feature, Best Original Score, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Could this prove it to be a bigger threat in more categories moving forward? It seems likely. Meanwhile, Jordan Peele’s Nope was the first to win in our brand new Best Horror film category. Its wins in Best Sound and Best Cinematography are greatly deserved as well.

Other notable winners from the 2023 DiscussingFilm Critic Awards include RRR for Best Original Song, Women Talking for Best Ensemble, Decision to Leave for Best International Feature, and Aftersun for Best First Feature. Blockbusters like Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and The Batman were also able to receive one win each across different categories. Finally, Brendan Fraser’s Best Actor win for his soul-crunching turnout in The Whale can’t go unrecognized.

Aside from introducing the Best Horror film category, this was also the first year where we allowed 10 films to be nominated for Best International Feature. We would like to thank all the voting members of the DiscussingFilm Critics Association (DFCA) for taking part in our fourth annual edition of the awards and for voting diligently and responsibly.
