‘The Amateur’ Exclusive Look – Rami Malek Returns To The Thriller Genre

Spy and espionage thrillers are dominating the streaming charts for all major streamers at the moment. Peacock and Paramount+ have found 2 of the biggest shows ever in spy thrillers with the launches of The Agency, starring Michael Fassbender and Richard Gere, and The Day of the Jackal, starring Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch, both of which are returning for second seasons. And then you’ve got Apple TV+ where Slow Horses prepares to debut its sixth season based on the long-running book series of spy novels, and as Slow Horses slowly joins the ranks of Severance and Ted Lasso as one of Apple’s most-watched shows, it’s never more evident that the spy genre is back in full force.

However, moviegoing audiences have seen little of that translate onto the big screen, the classic spy/espionage franchises like Mission Impossible and James Bond reign supreme over the box office, with The Final Reckoning releasing in theaters on May 23, but little original spy/espionage thrillers have found huge light on the theatrical stage. That is beginning to change with Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag, which just released into theaters last month starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as a married couple of spies, and now 20th Century will introduce their new espionage thriller The Amateur.

Starring Rami Malek (‘Bohemian Rhapsody’), Jon Bernthal (‘Daredevil: Born Again’), Laurence Fishburne (‘The Matrix’) and Rachel Brosnahan (‘Superman’), The Amateur follows Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer, who loses his wife in a London terrorist attack and realizes his bosses will not act due to conflicting internal priorities. Having blackmailed the agency to train him as a field operative, he embarks on a one-man mission to hunt down his wife’s killers.

In DiscussingFilm’s exclusive new look at The Amateur, the cast of the film break down this underdog story mixed with revenge tale that culminates in an unmissable espionage thriller. Watch the exclusive look here:
