New Arrivals for HBO Max August 2025

The HBO Max August 2025 list of new arrivals includes one of the biggest treats of the summer: Peacemaker Season 2. An instant success upon its debut, the HBO Max original series is entering a bold new era now that creator James Gunn has launched his DCU franchise after the release of Superman (2025). The adult-oriented DC show still follows the over-patriotic superhero (or anti-hero) Christopher Smith/Peacemaker (John Cena) and his 11th Street Kids team, comprising Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), John Economos (Steve Agee), and Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks). But as fans will find out for themselves beginning on August 21, there’s a bit of a twist to this second season.

When Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), who debuted in James Gunn’s animated Creature Commandos series and then reappeared in Superman, begins hunting down Peacemaker for killing his son in The Suicide Squad (2021), Christopher sneaks into different parallel dimensions at his disposal, where life is seemingly better. Plenty of multiversal shenanigans are in store for the HBO Max series. So far, DC fans know that Chris will run into a kind version of his deceased father (Robert Patrick) as well as another Peacemaker who’s packing even more impressive gear. Additionally, Chris’ romantic love for Harcourt will begin to twist their relationship in uncomfortable ways. New characters played by comedian Tim Meadows and Gunn staple Michael Rooker will also appear.

August 2025 is bringing the HBO Max streaming debut of Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025). The sixth film in the fan-favorite Final Destination series became its highest-grossing installment earlier this year. Led by a fresh young ensemble and featuring the final on-screen performance from horror icon Tony Todd, Bloodlines puts an exciting spin on the franchise’s lore by having the semi-personified form of Death come after the lineage of an unsuspecting woman who evaded a major tragedy decades ago. The horror movie is sure to be a streaming smash based on its unbelievable, Rube Goldberg-like opening sequence set at a “Skyview” high-rise restaurant tower alone. HBO Max subscribers can dive into Final Destination: Bloodlines starting on August 1.

Coming just a week later to the HBO Max streaming service is the underseen gem Freaky Tales (2024). Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Captain Marvel, Mississippi Grind) utilize a jam-packed ensemble cast, including Pedro Pascal, Dominique Thorne, Jay Ellis, Ben Mendelsohn, and singer Normani in her feature film acting debut. Set in 1980s Oakland, California, this anthology of sorts follows several converging plotlines: punk rockers battling Neo-Nazis, a man hell-bent on revenge, a rap battle for the history books, and an underdog basketball player gaining a mysterious new power. Few imaginative genre flicks swing for the fences like this one, so here’s hoping that Freaky Tales finds its audience when it premieres on August 8.

The next notable streaming premiere is The Legend of Ochi (2025), arriving on August 15. Built from the Spielbergian Amblin mold, the fantasy adventure centers on a young girl, Yuri (Helena Zengel), who is taught by her unrelenting father, Maxim (Willem Dafoe), to fear and hunt forest creatures known as “The Ochi” on the faraway island of Carpathia. When the girl discovers an injured baby ochi, she realizes that everything she’s known is wrong, and the two embark on an adventure that will change their lives forever. A24’s first venture into family-friendly entertainment contains a magical realist aesthetic, courtesy of writer-director Isaiah Saxon, that’s just the cherry on top of a story that genuinely pulls on the heartstrings.

There is more than enough repertory content to choose from HBO Max’s streaming library in August 2025, too. Families have many options with Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (2017), Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011), and Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile (2020) all getting added to the streamer this month. Finally, just in time for Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth television series, Ridley Scott’s polarizing sequel Alien: Covenant (2017) provides a very different prequel to 1979’s original Alien. Discover more on our monthly recs below, then check out the list of every film and TV show coming to the HBO Max streaming platform in August 2025!
