The premiere of Task headlines the HBO Max September 2025 list of new arrivals. Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby is back with another crime drama, this time set in the suburbs of Philadelphia. FBI agent Tom (Mark Ruffalo) heads a task force assigned to track down the criminal responsible for a recent string of violent robberies. The only thing is, the culprit is hiding in plain sight as an unsuspecting family man. As with Ingelsby’s other works, there is far more to this HBO original miniseries waiting to be unraveled across its 7 episodes. Up next is the HBO Max streaming debut of two recent, yet vastly different movies from the beloved indie distributor A24. The first is Friendship, arriving on September 5, 2025. Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd lead this hilarious black comedy about male loneliness and all the cringey social cues that come with making new friends as an adult. The second A24 film to look out for this month is Warfare, which is getting added on September 12. Writer-director Alex Garland, best known for Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War, and now 28 Years Later, teams up with real Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza to bring his haunting experiences as a U.S. Navy SEAL to life on the big screen.
While Warfare‘s hyperrealistic interpretation of 21st-century combat might not be for everyone, it’s still worth watching for its jam-packed cast of young, well-established stars. Such names include Joseph Quinn, Will Poulter, Kit Connor, Michael Gandolfini, Noah Centineo, and Charles Melton. Speaking of true stories, multiple fascinating documentaries are coming to the HBO Max streaming service in September 2025, too. One recommendation is the two-part HBO original documentary Seen & Heard: The History of Black Television, premiering on September 9. The series highlights how Black storytellers in television have not only survived but also thrived across the decades, despite the industry’s early reluctance to fully recognize them.
Finally, HBO Max’s streaming library is expanding its repertory content in September 2025. For starters, Evil Dead II, Misery, and The Cabin in the Woods are getting added for those looking to start the Halloween season early. HBO Max subscribers can never go wrong with classics like Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon and Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, either. Of course, it goes without saying before wrapping up that new episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 will be debuting on the streamer throughout September 2025 as well.
