After the nomination announcements for the Golden Globes, the 2023 Critics Choice Awards are the next large group on the list. Drawing from a pool of over 600 critics (including our very own Senior Film Critic Ben Rolph), the nominations for the 28th Annual Critics Choice Awards could give a pivotal boost to some underdog contenders in the upcoming awards season, or launch some major names even further ahead in the competition. This year, the Critics Choice Association (CCA) gave two major updates to their nominations, which are increasing Best Picture to 11 films instead of 10, due to an exact tie, and increasing the Best Director nods to 10. It was also announced that Hollywood legend Jeff Bridges will receive the Critics Choice Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s ceremony.

Everything Everywhere All at Once dominated the nominations for the 2023 Critics Choice Awards with 14 total nods, including Best Picture, Best Director for the Daniels, Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, and Best Supporting Actress for both Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu. Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans follows with 11 total nominations, counting Best Director for the man himself, Best Actress for Michelle Williams, Best Young Actor/Actress for Gabriel LaBelle, and Best Supporting Actor for both Paul Dano and Judd Hirsch. Babylon and The Banshees of Inisherin came in third and fourth place with 10 and 9 nominations respectively.

Other notable names that are starting to make a serious splash in the awards season and just gained more traction thanks to the 2023 Critics Choice nominations include blockbusters like Avatar: The Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Indie favorites like Women Talking and Aftersun got their due recognition as well. Finally, the Tollywood breakout hit RRR is not to be underestimated as it made it into Best Picture, Best Director for S.S. Rajamouli, and more. Keep reading to find out which of your favorite performers and filmmakers got nominated at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards and make sure to tune in to the show hosted by Chelsea Handler live on Sunday, January 15th on The CW! You can also check out the 2023 nominations for our very own DiscussingFilm Critics Awards!
