BAFTA Film Awards 2023: The Winners

The bronze actor mask trophies handed out to the winners from the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards.

The 2023 BAFTA Film Awards are finally here and bring with them a whole new wave of winners. The most prominent European-based voting group with 7,000 members across the UK and the world, The British Academy of Film and Television (BAFTA) is also one of the few major associations to select their awards with the input of a limited jury. The 2023 BAFTA Film Awards honored the best in global cinema while also spotlighting British contenders, bringing them to the forefront of the greater awards season race. Categories like Best British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer set this ceremony apart from any other in the year. Richard E. Grant hosted the 76th edition of the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday, February 19 2023, just 3 weeks ahead of the Oscars.

Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front dominated the winners from the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards with a total tally of 7 trophies, including Best Film, Best Director for Edward Berger, and Best Cinematography for James Friend. Aside from these outstanding wins, Netflix’s war epic also won Best Adapted Screenplay, which puts it in possible frontrunner territory for that category in the Oscars race. Overall, it seems like All Quiet on the Western Front is more of an Oscar threat than many were anticipating up until now. The film’s awards momentum is only just heating up.

The Banshees of Inisherin was tied with Elvis in second place with 4 wins at the BAFTA Film Awards. The Irish drama won Best British Film, Best Original Screenplay for Martin McDonagh, Best Supporting Actor for Barry Keoghan, and Best Supporting Actress for Kerry Condon. The latter two wins were seen as an upset as so far in the awards season, Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s Ke Huy Quan and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s Angela Bassett have dominated those respective categories. Meanwhile, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis rightfully won Best Casting, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hair, and Best Actor for Austin Butler.

With Tár‘s Cate Blanchett also winning the BAFTA Film award for Best Actress, it seems like the Oscar races for the two leading actor categories might not be as solidified as some might think. It’s seemingly come down to Brendan Fraser vs. Austin Butler and Michelle Yeoh vs. Cate Blanchett. Moving on, writer-director Charlotte Wells won Outstanding British debut for Aftersun, which is much deserved. Finally, as voted on by the public in the UK, this year’s EE rising star award went to Emma Mackey of Sex Education fame. Mackey can currently be seen in the British biographical drama Emily and is soon to appear in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
